Box Score HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Northeastern women's volleyball team had every intention of tarnishing Hofstra's perfect conference record on Wednesday night, scoring 23 points twice despite falling in straight sets (25-23, 25-15, 25-23).
Â
As a team, the Pride combined for five more kills than the Huskies, 45-40, improving to 17-0 in 2014 when leading their matches in kills. With the win, Hofstra also extended its winning streak to eight, and five straight against CAA teams.
Â
Jamie Bredahl led Northeastern with 13 kills, seven digs, and three assists, and had a hitting percentage of .222.
Â
Alexa Armstrong continued her streak of solid attacking, finishing the match with eight kills and two errors on 18 attacks. She and
Caterina Rosander were the only two Huskies to hit for more than .300 against Hofstra, and Rosander picked up five kills with a pair of solo blocks as well.
Â
Freshman hitter
Brigitte Burcescu dropped 12 attacks in for kills on the night, while teammate
Kristen Walding dished out 30 or more assists in her tenth consecutive match.
Natalia Skiba led the Huskies' back line with 20 digs.
Â
Preseason CAA Player of the Year Kelsie Wills landed 16 kills for Hofstra (17-2, 5-0 CAA), netting a double-double with 16 digs as well. Nuria Lopes da Silva was a thorn in Northeastern's side all match long, hitting for .538 with eight kills, three digs, and three blocks.
Â
Northeastern (8-10, 1-4 CAA) was quick to silence the Long Island crowd in the first set, jumping out to a 5-2 advantage on two kills by Rosander and
Hannah Fry, and an ace by Skiba. Hofstra would continue to chip away at the Huskies' lead, tying the set at 7-7 on back-to-back kills, and later at 9-9 and 10-10. After Walding found Bredahl for a kill, the Pride scored three unanswered points, and a kill by Veronika Kostova made it 14-13 Hofstra.
Â
The Pride managed to break a 16-16 tie with three straight kills, but Northeastern kept right at their heels, as Burcescu and Bredahl found the open court to bring the first set to 21-20. Bredahl landed three more kills down the stretch to tie the set at 23-23, but Hofstra scored two quick points, winning the first set 25-23.
Â
Tied at 5-5 in the second set, Northeastern struggled to execute with its attacking game, and Hofstra capitalized to score five out of the next six points to build a 10-6 advantage. Rosander managed to stifle two straight Pride attacks to bring the Huskies to within two at 11-9, but Hofstra began to heat up, connecting on five kills and two blocks to lead by eight, and rolling to a 25-15 second set win.
Â
The Huskies showed signs of making another comeback, starting the third set with a 7-2 run. Leading 8-5, Northeastern scored four of the next five points to go up by six, 12-6. After Hofstra cut the lead to four at 14-10, Walding found Burcescu and Armstrong for two straight kills, and the Huskies built their largest lead of the match, 17-10.
Â
However, Hofstra would soon turn the tables on Northeastern by stringing together two separate three-point runs to erase the deficit and tie the set at 21-21. The Pride would tack on three more points all on NU attacking errors to lead 24-22, and fittingly won the match two points later with Wills' 16th kill.
Â
Northeastern heads south on Saturday, Oct. 11 to South Carolina to battle another undefeated CAA team in College of Charleston. The Huskies will close out the weekend with another road match on Sunday, Oct. 12 against Big South member Campbell at 2 p.m.
