2014 Northeastern Volleyball Schedule
BOSTON – Northeastern volleyball head coach
Ken Nichols announced the team's 2014 schedule on Friday, July 11. The Huskies will play in three tournaments and will host 11 matches at Solomon Court as part of a challenging 30-game slate.
Â
"As always, we have a very demanding schedule ahead of us," said Nichols, who enters his 15th season with the Huskies. "Our non-conference schedule boasts some very strong regional competition, which should prepare us well for the rigors of the highly-competitive CAA."
Â
The 2014 campaign kicks off in Orlando, Florida, at the Radisson UCF Invitational on Aug. 29-30. Northeastern will battle Eastern Kentucky (10 a.m.) and Florida International (5 p.m.) on the opening day, before closing out the competition against host Central Florida (1 p.m.) on Aug. 30.
Â
The Huskies then hit the road again on Sept. 5-6 for the Rose Hill Classic in the Bronx, New York. Northeastern is slated to face Rider, Fairleigh Dickinson and host Fordham in a tournament that Nichols calls "a good test for a young squad."
Â
After two weekends away from Boston, the Huskies welcome Rhode Island for the home opener at Solomon Court on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. Northeastern defeated the Rams last season, 3-1, in a match played on Rhode Island's home floor.
Â
The Red and Black will then pack their bags once again for the Shamrock Invitational at the University of Notre Dame. After opening play against Northern Iowa on Sept. 12, Northeastern will take on a pair of power-conference opponents in Notre Dame (ACC) and TCU (Big 12) the following day.Â
Â
"Both Notre Dame and Northern Iowa have been top-25 teams more often than not, while TCU is a perennial bubble team," Nichols added.
Â
The Huskies play two of their next three matches in the cozy confines of Cabot Center. After a road contest at New Hampshire on Sept. 16, Northeastern entertains a pair of cross-town rivals, Boston College (Sept. 19) and Harvard (Sept. 20) in its final matches before the start of CAA play. The Huskies have enjoyed the upper hand against BC and Harvard in recent years; since 2010, Northeastern is 3-0 against both Boston foes, including a pair of 3-1 wins last season.
Â
Conference action kicks off on Sept. 26 when the Huskies travel to UNC Wilmington for a 7 p.m. showdown against the Seahawks. Northeastern swept UNCW in three matches last year, including a 3-2 decision in the CAA Semifinals.
Â
On Sept. 28, the Huskies will travel to Elon for a matchup against the CAA's newest member institution. The Phoenix posted a 16-17 record last season and a 7-9 mark in the Southern Conference.
Â
Northeastern will host Delaware (Oct. 3) and Towson (Oct. 5) in its first two conference home contests, before heading back on the road for a five-match swing. The trip begins on Long Island, where the Huskies will battle Hofstra on Oct. 8, before heading to Charleston to face the defending CAA champion Cougars on Oct. 11. Northeastern will be looking for a bit of revenge after Charleston edged the Huskies, 3-1, in the CAA championship game last season.
Â
The road trip continues against non-conference foe Campbell on Oct. 12, before wrapping up at James Madison (Oct. 17) and William & Mary (Oct. 18).
Â
Six of the Huskies' final eight matches will be at Solomon Court, starting with Elon and UNCW on Oct. 24 and Oct. 28, respectively. Road contests at Towson (Oct. 30) and Delaware (Nov. 2) follow, before a four-match homestand vs. Hofstra, Charleston, William & Mary, and James Madison closes out the regular season.
Â
The 2014 CAA Volleyball Championship will be held on Nov. 21-24 at the highest seed. Northeastern has qualified for the conference tournament in each of the last four seasons.Â
