Season StatsCAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Under the bright lights of Jordan Field, the Northeastern Huskies put together an outstanding all-around performance to defeat the Harvard Crimson, 1-0, extending their winning streak to six games while giving the Crimson their first loss of the season.
The story of the game for the Huskies was the strong defensive play of the team and specifically of
Kaci Coveleski,
Zoe Kale,
Kate Carlson, and
Jessica Unger. The four defenders kept the Harvard offense at bay throughout the 70 minutes of action, limiting them to just six shots, none of which were on net.
Individually, Coveleski put together her best performance of the 2014 season. The redshirt senior seemed to be all over the field, cutting off passes, redirecting shots, and guiding the defense to another solid performance in the month of September.
Also contributing to the defensive effort was sophomore goalkeeper
Becky Garner, who registered her third shutout of the 2014 season; three shutouts is a new career-high for a single season for the Somerset, England, native who now has a career total of five shutouts.
The first 35 minutes of the game came and went without a goal. Despite the Huskies playing well offensively, Harvard goalkeeper Issy Davies was able to turn away all seven shots NU took.
The second half, as the case has been over this six-game winning streak, would be different.
Natalie Stewart broke through for the Huskies at the 27:54 mark, the team's lone second half shot. Leading up to the goal,
Kelly Dunn and
Emma Lamison worked the ball down the right side of the field. Lamison then carried the ball into the circle, avoided several Harvard defenders, and put a shot on net. Davies made the initial save, but the ball trickled out to Stewart who ripped a one-timer to the lower right hand corner to score the game-winner. The goal is her third of the season, and was unassisted.
The second half has continued to be where the Huskie shine. During these six victories, NU has scored 13 goals on 35 shots in the second half, while limiting their opponents to just four goals.
The combination of Carlson, Lamison and
Marisa Dunn generated strong offensive chances throughout the first half. The Huskies outshot the Crimson 7-3, as Carlson registered a team-high two shots on goal.
The Huskies applied their best pressure of the first half with just less than 13 minutes remaining. Unger delivered a terrific pass to a running
Emmy Zweserijn. The sophomore forward protected the ball well and was able to get a powerful shot off on goal that Davies turned away.
At the 1:24 mark of the first half, the Huskies earned their second corner of the game, which would lead to another terrific chance for NU. Lamison inserted the ball to Stewart who set up Carlson for a terrific chance, but Davies was there to make the save and keep the game scoreless.
Northeastern is back in action on Friday, Sept. 26 when the team travels to Boston University. The Huskies game against the Terriers will be the final game of their four-game road trip. Two days later, NU returns home to Dedham Field and plays host to UC Davis.
Game notesNU is now 23-11 against the Crimson all-time.
This is the third time since 2005 the Huskies have won six consecutive games.
Becky Garner now has three shutouts in 2014, a new career-high for a single-season.
Natalie Stewart now has a team-high 11 points following her goal.
