Box Score | Season StatsBOSTON – The Northeastern Huskies defeated crosstown rival No. 20 Boston University, 2-1, to extend their winning streak to seven games.
Â
The last time the Huskies won at least seven consecutive games came in 2011, when the team won eight in a row. It was a high-energy game between the two teams, resulting in several outstanding plays and moments.
Â
The first half ended in a 0-0 tie, but it was clear that both teams were primed for a big second half.
Â
The Terriers broke through for the game's first goal at the 24:30 mark of the second half. A diving
Becky Garner turned the initial shot from the Terriers away, but the rebound popped in the air and the Terriers were able to finish it and take the lead.
Â
Northeastern, however, responded well and started to control the tempo of the game leading to several offensive chances.
Caroline Judge played a huge role in the midfield for the Huskies, helping develop offensive scoring chances and distributing the ball well.
Â
With 17:06 left, the Huskies beat Boston University's Valentina Cerda for their first goal.
Â
The play started with
Kate Carlson finding a cutting
Vanessa Pryor towards the left corner. Pryor took the pass and changed course, running towards the circle with
Natalie Stewart by her side. After a few slick moves to shake off some defenders, Pryor set up Stewart with a one-timer that the sophomore buried to tie the game at one.
Â
Pryor has emerged as a catalyst for the offense as of late, and that held true again tonight as she helped guide Northeastern on the offensive end and provide her teammates with several excellent looks on net. Â
Â
The Huskies scored their second goal on a penalty shot off the stick of
Jessica Unger at the 10:39 mark. After two yellow cards, NU had a significant advantage and was able to draw the penalty shot. Unger placed the ball perfectly to the lower left corner, just out of the reach of Cerda.
Â
As we have seen throughout this winning streak, the Huskies played extremely well in the second half. They registered six shots in the game's final 35 minutes leading to two goals.
Â
Defensively, the game was another strong showing for the Huskies. In front of Garner,
Kaci Coveleski,
Zoe Kale,
Alyssa Carlson and Unger all utilized timely poke-checks to keep the Terrier's attack out of sync.
Â
The Huskies allowed a mere three shots on goal throughout the game, and made several key plays during penalty corners to keep the Terriers from tying the game in the closing minutes. Â
Â
Northeastern returns to action on Sunday when the Huskies host UC Davis for the first time in program history. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
Â
STUDENTS: Buses will be available for fans interested in attending Sunday's game. They will be departing from Chicken Lou's at 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. and will bring fans back to campus following the game.
Â
