Infographic DEDHAM, Mass. – Under a rainy sky, the Northeastern field hockey team fell 4-3 to Drexel in its conference opener at Dedham Field Friday night.
Â
The Huskies (3-8, 0-1 CAA) capitalized on two penalty corner opportunities on the night, but it wasn't enough as Drexel (3-6, 1-0 CAA) came away with the victory.
Â
Five different Huskies tallied a point on the night, led by
Kate Carlson and
Vanessa Pryor who each had three shots and a goal in the contest. Northeastern and Drexel each finished with 14 shots, while the Huskies had a 7-2 penalty corner advantage.
Becky Garner finished with five saves in the game for the Huskies.
Â
Drexel jumped out to an early lead literally scoring in the first seconds of the game. The Dragons took the opening pass and weaved up the field depositing the ball in the goal in 20 seconds.
Â
But the Huskies fired back 15 minutes into the game when Stewart took an inbound pass and weaved her way past a handful of Drexel defenders, into the circle, and fired over the left shoulder of the Drexel goalkeeper for the score. The goal was her team-leading fifth of the year for the Huskies.
Â
Drexel tallied back-to-back goals as the second half opened, to take a 3-1 lead over the Huskies, but Northeastern cut into that lead once again when
June Curry-Lindahl sent in a penalty corner pass to Stewart. Stewart left it for
Jessica Unger who tapped it forward to a streaking Carlson who whipped it in for the score. The assist was the first point of the season for Unger and just her second career assist.
Â
As the Huskies were gaining momentum in the game, at the other end of the field just seconds later, Drexel was awarded a penalty stroke opportunity that they capitalized on to retake a two-goal lead.
Â
The Huskies, unrelenting, cut into that lead with just over five minutes remaining the game as Pryor took a direct entry on a penalty corner from
Kristin Abreu and tagged the ball off of the stick of a defender and into the goal for the score, her third of the season.
Â
But the score remained at 4-3 as Drexel bested the Huskies for the first time in the last four meetings.
Â
Northeastern will remain at home this weekend when the team returns to Dedham Field on Sunday, October 4 at 3 p.m. to take on Boston University. It is also Alumni Day for Northeastern and there will be one bus heading to the field from Chicken Lou's at 2 p.m.
