InfographicBOSTON – The Northeastern women's volleyball team took on Charleston Friday night at Cabot Center, the second time this week the Huskies battled with the Cougars. NU earned another second set victory with extra points, 28-26, but missed out on defeating the South Carolina team, 3-1.
Brigitte Burcescu earned her seventh double-double of 2015 with 16 kills and 13 digs, while captain
Jamie Bredahl earned her 11th double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs.
Laynie Whitehead and
Caterina Rosander each picked up eight kills. Rosander also added five blocks, while
Gabrielle Eyl dug up 13 of the Cougars' attacks. On the service line,
Ashlee Asada earned a team-high of four aces.
Charleston's Melisa Morello tallied 23 kills on the night, upheld by Allison Beckman's 31 assists. Defensively, Morello led the team with 15 digs, while Kayla Tronick earned six blocks.
Set one recap: (25-18, Charleston)• Whitehead was the first to get NU on the board.
• The Teams evened out at seven and 11 points before Reiter entered with a kill and Asada with an ace to push the Huskies up, 13-11.
• Charleston's offense dominated to 23-16. NU pulled out two kills from Bredahl and Burcescu at 23-18 but Charleston had two exchanges in their favor to move on with the match.
Set two recap: (28-26, Northeastern)• Northeastern found a rhythm to control the set, 15-7.
• Charleston put the pressure on and neutralized the stanza at 21 points.
• After 24-24, neither team could find the upper hand.
• Bredahl found a spot across the court to bring NU up and a Rosander-Bredahl block takes the match to four sets.
Set three recap: (25-21, Charleston)• After an even set at four points, the Huskies took the stanza to 9-5 with Bredahl swings and a Rosander block.
• Three straight points gave Charleston a 14-12 advantage, but two three-point runs by NU put the Red and Black back up, 20-19.
• Charleston responded with a 6-1 run to close out the stanza.
Set four recap: (25-18, Charleston)• NU retained the upper hand, 7-3, but Charleston entered six straight to slip by, 9-7.
• Dizon added three kills to lift NU into double digits, 12-10.
• Charleston's five straight points to 17-11 made it difficult for NU to come back.
• Burcescu put down two kills at 24-18 but the Cougars' offense prevailed to end the match.
