DEDHAM, Mass.
– The Northeastern field hockey team pushed No. 17 Boston University to its limit Sunday afternoon at Dedham Field, but fell in a tough 3-2 overtime battle on Alumni Day.

The Huskies used back-to-back goals they tallied in a six-minute span in the second half and Becky Garner made some outstanding saves to force overtime between the two teams.

Freshman Laura MacLachlan scored her first career goal and Kristin Abreu recorded the Huskies first penalty stroke of the season in the outing while Becky Garner finished with six saves.

The first half featured a defensive battle between both teams. Neither squad would allow their opponent into the scoring circle as there was just a combined five shots between the two teams through the first 35 minutes of play. The Huskies best opportunity came early in the game as Hannah Wein fired in a shot that deflected off of June Curry-Lindahl's stick but went wide. Northeastern kept BU out of the scoring circle for the first 16 minutes of play.

BU got on top first, scoring twice quickly in the beginning of the second half, but the Huskies answered back just as quickly.

Natalie Stewart started the scoring opportunities off weaving her way into the scoring area and dishing a pass off to MacLachlan who got her stick on it and deflected a looping shot over the head of the Boston University goalie and just inside the goal line for the first score of the game at 46:10.

Six minutes later, the Huskies drew the first penalty corner of the game and in doing so created a penalty stroke opportunity for themselves. Abreu took control of the situation and slammed a shot to the right side to even the score. The penalty stroke goal was the first such goal for the Huskies this season and Abreu's third goal of the season.

Gardner made some tough saves down the stretch to keep Boston University off of the board and send the game into overtime. But in the OT period, with the teams taking part in seven on seven play, Boston University used a man-advantage to get the game-winner past Gardner as the Huskies fell.

Northeastern fell to 0-2 in overtime in 2015, as they also dropped a contest to No. 18 UMass during their home opener.

The Huskies will head out on their first CAA road trip of the season beginning play next Friday, October 9 at William and Mary followed by a meeting with James Madison on Sunday afternoon.
