Huskies close first night of the season with Arizona State

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The entire roster for Northeastern volleyball has now made an appearance in the 2015 campaign, after the Huskies took on Arizona State Friday, Aug. 29 in the second game of the Falcon Classic, hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado.
 
No. 16 ASU clinched the evening match-up in three sets (25-16, 25-14, 25-17). Both teams dished out 87 attacks throughout the match as Brigitte Burcescu led the Huskies with nine kills, while Hannah Fry supported the offense with four. ASU's Cassidy Pickrell, BreElle Bailey, and Macey Gardner led the Sun Devils in kills, contributing 24 kills combined.
 
In the back row, first-year Gabrielle Eyl posted 11 digs, while Burcescu and junior Ashlee Asada had four a piece. Junior Caterina Rosander held up the defense with three blocks.
  
Set 1 recap (25-16, Arizona State)
• Northeastern and Arizona State went back and forth throughout the first set before Arizona took a lead that NU couldn't overcome.Northeastern made it interesting, cutting State's lead to just two at 10-12 but the Sun Devils went on a 4-1 run.
 
Set 2 recap: (25-14, Arizona State)
• ASU continued to capitalize on their offense in the second set, breaking out with a 4-0 lead. 
• 
Midway through, Northeastern earned three straight points thanks to unforced Sun Devil errors at 15-10, but Bailey ended the Husky run with three straight kills of her own.
• The Sun Devils clinched the second with kills from Mercedes Binns and Pickrell.
 
Set 3 recap: (25-17, Arizona State)
• The Huskies put up a fight in the third set with Fry, junior Jamie Bredahl, and sophomore Kristen Walding pulling the team to their first lead of the night, 5-4.
• The teams were even at the fourth, sixth, and 10th point, but the Sun Devils went on a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 advantage that led to their win.
 
Next up
The Huskies return to action tomorrow, Aug. 29, against Air Force at noon in their third game of the tournament.
