Cherylain Dizon and sophomore
Brigitte Burcescu led the Huskies offense in Saturday night's match in favor of Montana, 3-1, at the U.S. Air Force Academy's Falcon Classic in honor of Amy Svoboda.
The Huskies picked up set No. 1 at 25-23, but were unable to gain the next three, 25-14, 25-20, and 25-23.
Dizon and Burcescu racked in eight kills a piece, while junior
Jamie Bredahl and sophomore
Carmen Costa tabbed five each. Bredahl also maintained composure in the back line with 11 digs, next to first-year
Gabrielle Eyl with 13.
Kristen Walding put up a match-high of 30 assists for the Huskies' 35 total kills, while
Caterina Rosander and
Hannah Fry posted five and three blocks at the net, respectively.
Montana hit at .211 in their second match of the Classic, with leaders Hannah Sackett (22 kills) and Capri Richardson dominating the offense. Sadie Ahearn cleaned up with 20 digs for the Griz, while Rachel Dearman led with 24 assists and 11 digs.
The Huskies close out the Falcon Classic 0-4.
The USAFA hosted the second annual Falcon Classic in honor of former Air Force student-athlete, Amy Svoboda. Svoboda, a 1989 Academy graduate and four-year student-athlete, was tragically killed during an A-10 training accident in 1997. She was one of the first 14 female fighter pilots and one of the first six to ever fly the A-10.
Set 1 recap: (25-23, Northeastern)• The Huskies rolled through set one by maintaining a strong lead throughout.
• Walding set the Huskies up with gems as the team tallied seven kills in the first 15 exchanges.
• Montana stirred things up, posting a three-point lead and advancing to 23 points.
• A Timeout from NU was all the Huskies needed before
Hannah Fry found a sweet spot to close in on the set.
Set 2 recap: (25-14, Montana)• The Huskies gained a two-point lead at the start, before the Griz landed ahead with two aces and a kill.
• Dizon fueled a return that encouraged successful swings from Bredahl, Burcescu, and Costa.
• NU garnered nine kills, but blocks from Montana stood in the way of NU taking set two.
Set 3 recap: (25-20, Montana)• Northeastern entered set three behind, but middle blocker/outside hitter Costa sparked a comeback.
• The Huskies hit 15 points by digging out of a four-point slump with Costa's kill and three straight aces from Burcescu.
• The teams continued toward 25 with three ties along the way, but Montana's Capri Richardson edged the Griz back in front.
Set 4 recap: (25-23, Montana)• The teams welcomed set four with four ties in the first five points. Northeastern picked up momentum, pulling ahead to 9-5 before Montana's first time out.
• NU led on with a four-point advantage thanks to blocks by Rosander and Fry.
• The teams once again pulled even four times in the later half. Montana called one last timeout after Costa's ace at 24-23 then moved on to win the match by two.
