InfographicUSAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Northeastern entered day two of the Falcon Classic looking to redeem themself against host U.S. Air Force Academy.
The Huskies claimed their first set-win of the season, 25-19, but USAFA took the win on home court, 3-1 (25-15, 19-25, 26-24, 25-13).
Captain
Jamie Bredahl had a match-high of 15 assists, with
Kristen Walding adding 14 of her own. Northeastern out-blocked the Falcons with
Hannah Fry and
Caterina Rosander at the net, each tallying four a piece.
First-year
Gabrielle Eyl (11 digs) and junior
Ashlee Asada (eight digs) ruled the Huskies' defense, while outside hitter
Brigitte Burcescu tallied 12 kills and eight digs. Northeastern had season-highs with 34 kills and 37 digs, as well as five aces.
USAFA's Akokwe Clement led the Falcons with 15 kills, followed by Shelley Spires with 12. The team's offense, with the help of Sarah Hellman's 24 assists, led Academy to their first win of the season.
Set 1 recap: (25-15, Air Force)• NU started the match ahead, gaining an 11-10 advantage. The Falcons spotted deep corners on the Huskies, but senior
Cherylain Dizon responded with a kill before USAFA closed out the set.
Set 2 recap: (25-19, Northeastern)• The Huskies were determined and rallied back with an 8-4 run by spotting the right holes over the net. NU advanced to 12-8, pushing USAFA to their first timeout.
• NU was not rattle by USAFA's attempts to get back on the board and took their first set of the season, 25-19.
Set 3 recap: (26-24, Air Force)• NU inched toward 15 points with the help of
Taylor Reiter, Dizon,
Laynie Whitehead, and Burcescu, despite Air Force's five-point lead.
• A thrilling rally at the midway ended in favor of NU. The Huskies held the Falcons at 14 points and extended to a three-point lead.
• The teams continued to tie up the set past 25, but an error at the net resulted in USAFA's victory, 26-24.
Set 4 recap: (25-13, Air Force)• Burcescu's four kills and blocks from Fry, Rosander, and Whitehead slowed down the Falcons' momentum as the Huskies took another three-point lead late in the set. USAFA remained ahead and closed in on 25 with kills from Maggie Sherrill.
