Infographic NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Huskies wrapped up day one of the Columbia Invitational, hosted by Columbia University in New York City, with two losses - including this afternoon's match vs. American University, 3-0.
Northeastern recorded 32 kills against the Eagles, led by
Brigitte Burcescu with 11, Carmen Costa with six under a .312 hitting percentage, and Cherylain Dizon with five. Jamie Bredahl recorded her second double-double of 2015 with 12 assists and 11 digs.
Kristen Walding also put in 12 assists, while
Ashlee Asada covered the defense with 14 digs.
American's Sarah Katz and Allison Cappellino both tallied 10 kills a piece, while Monika Smidova earned seven kills and 29 assists. Smidova also tabbed 10 digs, alongside Hoakalei Dawson with 16 digs.
Set 1 recap: (25-15, American)• Northeastern posted its stronger hitting in the first set with 11 kills total.
• Despite the early lead from American, NU gained a 4-0 run to close in on the Eagles.
• Costa put the Huskies in double digits but the Eagles posed their own 4-0 run on NU to take the set.
Set 2 recap: (25-20, American)• NU was determined to jump ahead, taking a 12-8 advantage with kills from
Laynie Whitehead, Burcescu and Costa.
• The frenzy pushed American to their first timeout, who eventually regrouped to extend the score in their favor.
• The Huskies hung in, jumping to the 25-point range with three kills by Burcescu, but a service error gave set-point to American.
Set 3 recap: (25-15, American)• Columbia held the lead throughout the set, but the Huskies pulled out a five-point run to stall the Eagles at 23 points.
• Gabrielle Eyl lofted two aces on American turf, while Bredahl, Costa, and Burcescu swung to improve the Red and Black's slump - but two kills by the Eagles led the team to their first win of the season.
