InfographicCHESTNUT HILL, Mass. –The Northeastern women's volleyball team opened the New England Challenge in a 3-0 fall to the Boston College Eagles on Thursday night. The set scores were 20-25, 15-25 and 12-25.
The Huskies registered 25 kills total on the night with 40 digs and seven blocks.
Brigitte Burcescu tabbed six kills, while
Cherylain Dizon had five and
Jamie Bredahl and
Caterina Rosander tallied four a piece. Bredahl led the assists with 13 and right behind was
Kristen Walding with nine.
Gabrielle Eyl paced the back row defense with 14 digs and at the net were Burcescu, Rosander and
Carmen Costa with two blocks each.
The Eagles offense was carried by Katty Workman and Sol Calvete with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Mallori Moffat supported the Eagles with a match-high of 22 assists and covering the Huskies' attacks was Madisen Lydon with 12 digs.
Set 1 recap: (25-20, Boston College)• Northeastern showed its best offense in the first set with 11 kills.
• The Huskies opened up strong with an 8-6 lead before the Eagles took over the score.
• Bredahl and
Hannah Fry hustled on the court and managed to minimize the gap, 13-12.
• The second half of the set saw a Burcescu kill and a clutch Kill from Bredahl right at the 10-foot line to end a BC run.
• Despite the swings, a block by BC closed out the stanza in their favor.
Set 2 recap: (25-15 Boston College)• Both sides were eager for the set, holding each other even at the first few points.
• BC ran with an early lead, but Dizon and Rosander notched three kills to end the streak at 11-6.
• NU fought with a three-point extension to reach double digits, 14-10, thanks to a kill from Burcescu and blocks by the sophomore and Costa.
• Walding rattled the Eagles with a sneak attack in the last five points, but BC shook it off to finish off set two.
Set 3 recap: (25-12, Boston College)• The Red and Black weren't ready to drop and turned in with another early lead.
• The Eagles responded with four runs to the midway.
• Whitehead and Dizon kept the Huskies afloat in the second half, but the Eagles were too dominant and held NU at 12 points while they continued on to 25.
Up nextNortheastern goes head-to-head with Harvard on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. in the second day of the New England Challenge. The Crimson will host the Huskies at the Malkin Athletic Center.
