Mpofu's golden goal brings NU three CAA points

Box Score | Season Stats | Infographic

HARRISONBURG, Va. – After playing more than 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Ackim Mpofu found a way to break through with the match-winning goal for the Northeastern men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon as the Huskies overcame a 20-4 shot deficit to defeat James Madison in double overtime.

Kevin Carvalho assisted on Mpofu's golden goal during the 103rd minute, initiating the set piece that ultimately brought NU three meaningful points in the league table. At the time of release, Northeastern (4-9-0, 2-4-0 CAA) successfully leapfrogged four CAA teams, including James Madison (1-9-3, 1-3-2 CAA), to jump into sole possession of fourth place.

NU goalkeeper Jonathan Thuresson stopped four shots en route to his fourth clean sheet of the season and second in his last three appearances. Thuresson's biggest defensive play came during the 70th minute, when the junior saved a penalty kick by the Dukes' Toby Appleton.

Khori Bennett (eighth minute), Charlton Muhlauri (79th), and Carvalho (90th) registered Northeastern's best offensive chances prior to Mpofu's game-winner, with Muhlauri's and Carvalho's shots landing on goal.

Gaku Lange and Muhlauri each picked up yellow cards during the 38th and 76th minutes, respectively, while the NU bench was also cautioned with yellow during the 83rd minute.
