Volleyball stuns Hofstra on Alumni Day

BOSTON – The Huskies put on a show for a number of alumni who attended the match today in Cabot Center. Northeastern improves to 17-5 overall and 7-1 in CAA action after a clean sweep of Hofstra. (15-6, 5-3 CAA) After a close 25-22 set one score, the Huskies continued the attack to win the final two frames 25-17.
 
Northeastern remains undefeated at home with a 9-0 record at Cabot. The Huskies have also now tied their 2012 record when the team finished the season 20-7. In addition, Northeastern had a sideout percentage over 70 for each of the three sets, averaging 75% overall.
 
Jamie Bredahl led the team with 14 kills and a .464 hitting percentage. Kristen Walding notched 36 of Northeastern's 39 assists and Gabrielle Eyl put up 10 digs. Caterina Rosander had a solid net game, totaling five blocks.
 
The Pride competed well, led by Laura Masciullo and Semen Sen with 10 kills each, Sen tabbing a .692 hitting percentage. In the first set, the Pride were able to fight through 14 tie scores and three lead changes but dropped off as the sets went by, unable to grab a lead in set three.
 
Set One Recap (25-22, Northeastern)
  • The Huskies and Pride fought to a 10-10 start to kick things off, going back and forth the whole way.
  • After falling behind 14-13, NU tied things up on a Hofstra service error.
  • A blast of a kill from Rosander gave Northeastern the lead at 18-17.
  • Hofstra called a timeout after White's slick kill to give the Huskies a 22-21 lead.
  • The Pride used another timeout as the Huskies made it a 24-21 advantage.
  • A Jamie Bredahl kill gave the Huskies all they needed to capture the first set, winning it by a count of 25-22.
 
Set Two Recap (25-17, Northeastern)
  • Hannah Fry picked up Northeastern's first kill of the set to cut Hofstra's lead to 2-1.
  • Burcescu drilled a kill to give NU a 6-5 edge.
  • Back-to-back bombs from Bredahl brought NU into a 12-10 lead.
  • Hofstra called a timeout after NU went on a four-point run to claim a 13-10 lead.
  • The Huskies created a five-point lead for themselves, landing a 19-14 advantage.
  • A strike from Bredahl fell just in-bounds to extend the NU lead to 23-16.
  • Northeastern sealed the deal with a 25-17 triumph.
 
Set Three Recap (25-17, Northeastern)
  • A kill from Rosander and an ace from Bredahl gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead right off the bat.
  • Consecutive kills from Burcescu and Bredahl made it 7-4 Northeastern.
  • Hofstra landed three consecutive points, cutting NU's lead to 10-8.
  • Jamie Bredahl caught fire, earning back-to-back kills for a 12-9 Husky lead.
  • A missile from Burcescu gave the Huskies a 17-11 lead.
  • Bredahl's thirteenth kill of the day put NU in front 22-15.
  • The Huskies locked it down with a 25-17 win.

Northeastern hits the road again to take on James Madison and William and Mary in a Thursday-Saturday stint (10/20, 10/22) before a re-match at Hofstra's home court on Oct. 26.
