Northeastern suffers 3-1 setback at James Madison

Harrisonburg, Va. – After playing in the comfort of Cabot Center for the last six matches, the Northeastern volleyball team suffered a 3-1 setback at James Madison to open the second half of conference play. James Madison (12-10, 4-5 CAA) had a significant advantage in blocks over the first two sets, earning decisive victories. (25-18, 25-19) Northeastern (17-6, 7-2 CAA) played a strong set three to deny the Dukes the sweep. (26-24) The Huskies opened set four looking to make a come from behind attack to force set five but were unable to finish off the last few points, dropping the set and match with a 25-17 defeat.
 
Five of Northeastern's six losses this season are a result of being two sets down to open the match. Conversely, when Northeastern wins the first set it is 13-0, when the Huskies go 2-0 or 1-1 they are 9-0 and 8-1 respectively. The Huskies will look to rebound and start the match strong against the Tribe on Saturday.
 
Leading the Husky offense was senior Jamie Bredahl with 12 kills. Caterina Rosander had the most precise swing of the night, recording nine kills with just one error for a .333 hitting percentage. Kristen Walding added 32 helpers to the match and three Huskies put up double-digit digs. Gabrielle Eyl lead the pack with 16 digs, while Bredahl and Clare Lund followed close behind with 12 and 11 respectively.
 
James Madison found their game and never looked back. Standout Janey Goodman hit 25 kills, surpassing 1500 career kills in the process. Tilbe Yaglioglu and Sarah Martin registered 20 and 19 assists respectively while Kelly Robertson and Taylor Gail made nine and seven blocks at the net. Four Dukes tallied double-digit digs with Taylor Austin leading the team with 28.

  • JMU jumped ahead 6-10 but the Huskies came right back locking the score at 10.
  • James Madison continued the charge hitting 20 points with the Huskies at 15.
  • Northeastern chipped back but quick kills from Bryn Recker and Janey Goodman gave the Dukes a 2-0 lead.

  • Rosander tipped one over to keep the Dukes within reach at 4-2.
  • A pair of kills from Bredahl and an ace from White gave the Huskies their first lead of the night at 8-7 forcing a JMU timeout.
  • Burcescu ties it back up at 13 to stay in it.
  • As Northeastern continued to climb, James Madison began to lose its composure, falling two behind at 20-18.
  • James Madison relied on Janey Goodman to force the set to extra points but the Huskies tallied two quick ones for a 26-24 set score.
 
Set Four Recap (25-17 James Madison)
  • Northeastern seemed to have found a solution to James Madison's attack as the Huskies blazed to a 6-3 lead.
  • Eyl sends a free ball over that goes down for a point putting Northeastern up 8-3.
  • A kick from Lund kept the ball in play as the Huskies held a 10-8 lead.
  • The Dukes benefitted from a couple Husky mishaps putting them back up by one at 15-14.
  • Janey Goodman registered back-to-back kills for a 18-14 JMU advantage.
  • A 7-3 run from the Dukes took the match home to open the second half of CAA play.
 
Looking Ahead
Northeastern will look to regain momentum at William and Mary on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
