BOSTON – Northeastern and Charleston, the top two teams in the CAA this season by far, squared off at Cabot Center with the match ending in favor of the Huskies on Friday night. Northeastern (19-7, 9-3 CAA) regains sole possession of the top spot in the CAA and upheld its shimmering 10-0 home record for the 2016 season. Charleston (15-8, 8-3 CAA) moves back down to second place after a brief stint at the top.
Gabrielle Eyl notched a career high 31 digs in the four set match, with Bredahl and Wang adding 16 and 13 respectively.
Carmen Costa recorded the match high hitting percentage at .500 on nine kills and just one error.
Brigitte Burcescu registered a season high 15 kills, also with just one error for a .378 hitting percentage.
As a team, the Huskies averaged a hitting percentage of .222 through the match, including hitting .375 in set three. The team also registered a 60 percent sideout rate, gaining possession on 73 percent of Charleston's serves in set four.
The Cougars laid it all on the line to retain the top spot in conference play. A total of four Cougars notched double-digit kills, led by Kennedy Madison with 15. Allison Beckman set up the attack with 38 assists and McKala Rhodes manned the defense with 24 digs. Charleston heads to New York to face a streaking Hofstra squad on Sunday.
Set One Recap (25-22 Northeastern)
- The top two teams in the conference showed up to play in Cabot center, going point for point, Northeastern keeping a slight advantage.
- The Huskies began to pull away at 11-8 but a Charleston timeout rejuvenated the Cougars to knot the score at 12.
- The score was tied five more times before Northeastern went on a 4-1 run to take set one.
Set Two Recap (25-17 Charleston)
- The Cougars were on the hunt in set two, pouncing to a 10-4 lead.
- Charleston extended their lead with eight points coming from kills. (18-10)
- The Huskies crept back but the early lead was too far to catch and the Cougars tied the match at one all.
Set Three Recap (25-22 Northeastern)
- Northeastern came out blazing in set three, taking a 9-3 lead early.
- Charleston notched a streak of points to cut the lead to 10-11 and then tied the score at 16.
- Northeastern inched its way to 20, with the Cougars right on its tail.
- Charleston was able to catch the Huskies again at 22 but Northeastern tallied three straight to gain a 2-1 match advantage.
Set Four Recap (25-22 Northeastern)
- Northeastern got the early jump at 3-0 but Charleston in a do or die set tied the score at 6.
- Northeastern attempted to create a cushion for itself but the Cougars would not let up.
- The Huskies gained a three-point advantage at 18-15 and never looked back.
- After climbing to 22-18 and 24-22, a kill from Jamie Bredahl preserved a sparkling 10-0 home record this season.
