Huskies rally for 3-2 win over Towson

BOSTON – The Northeastern volleyball team showed incredible motivation and confidence in its second five set match in two days. The team engaged in an all out battle against Elon last evening and returned to Cabot tonight putting up another strong performance against a very tough Towson team who came off one day's rest. Northeastern (15-5, 5-1 CAA) remains undefeated at home this season with the victory over the Tigers (15-5, 3-3 CAA).
 
The Huskies improve their record to 11-0 when they win the first set. (25-22) Northeastern was able to put set two and three behind them (25-19, 25-13), before winning decisively in sets four and five to win the match. (25-17, 15-10)
 
Kristen Walding was the Husky standout in tonight's match. In addition to notching a career high eight kills, Walding dished out 43 assists and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Walding has now totaled 40 or more assists in ten matches this season. In 2015, Walding never reached the mark.
 
Several other Huskies recorded top performances tonight. Gabrielle Eyl set a career best with 29 digs and also contributed two aces to the match. In addition, Caterina Rosander tied her season high of seven blocks and Brigitte Burcescu tabbed a team high 11 kills.
 
A very strong Tiger squad showed up to Cabot tonight. Jocelyn Kuilan paced the Towson offense with 13 kills. Jessica Lewis and Carola Biver followed suit with 12 and 10 respectively. Rookie Marrisa Wonders registered 34 assists and libero Anna Holehouse put up 23 digs.
 
Set One Recap: (25-22 Northeastern)
  • Towson jumped out to a quick lead, but consecutive kills from Fry gave NU a 5-3 lead.
  • Walding and White shut down a Towson attack with a huge block, extending the Huskies' lead to three.
  • Towson took the lead, reaching 15-12 at one point, but NU regained possession after a kill by Rosander.
  • White tied it up at 16 with back-to-back kills
  • Rosander put up two consecutive blocks for the 23rd and 24th point before a Towson attack error ended the set.
 
Set Two Recap: (25-19 Towson)
  • A service error and ball handling error by Towson gave the Huskies the first two points of the second set.
  • Towson's Steadman registered a pair of kills early in the set, followed by a Tiger service ace to extend its lead to 9-6.
  • Walding registered an impressive kill off a Towson overpass to bring NU to within two (15-13) and then again to bring the Huskies to within 1 (16-15).
  • Towson took a three-point lead, forcing a Northeastern timeout. (18-15)
  • Towson continued to widen the margin, holding a 23-18 advantage, but another block by Rosander gave the Huskies possession. NU couldn't get any farther, as an attack error by Bredahl gave the Tigers the win.
 
Set Three Recap: (25-13 Towson)
  • A few attack errors by the Huskies gave Towson the 3-2 lead, but Fry made up for it with a kill to tie it up at three.
  • Walding was strong at the net, registering a sneaky kill into the middle of Towson's court to bring the score to 6-9 in favor of Towson.
  •  A block, followed by two consecutive aces by Lindsay Flaherty gave Towson an 11-point lead. (19-8)
  • Eyl tallied an ace for the Huskies 10th point of the set, but Towson regained possession not long after.
  • A service error by Wang sent Towson to set point. (24-13)
  • Towson responded with a kill from Payton Windell which gave Tigers the win.
 
Set Four Recap: (25-17 Northeastern)
  • An attack error by Towson handed the Huskies the first point of the set.
  • Eyl fired a deep serve into the corner of Towson's court, and the Tigers couldn't return it, giving NU a two-point lead at 4-2.
  • Burcescu hit a big kill to maintain the two-point lead, which was widened after a Towson attack error.
  • NU held a six-point lead at 12-6 after scoring three-straight points
  • Towson called a timeout after the Huskies charged to a 17-9 advantage.
  • A kill by Walding (19-12) marked a new career-high.
  • Three kills from Jamie Bredahl led to the Huskies' comeback win, forcing the match to five sets.
 
Set Five Recap: (15-10 Northeastern)
  • An attack error by Towson tied it at 1-1.
  • Kills by Fry and Burcescu gave NU a two-point lead (4-2).
  • Northeastern led 8-4 at the side switch after a kill from Burcescu. Towson threatened to sneak back into the game, cutting the lead to one, but the Huskies held on tight to their lead.
  • Another block by Rosander gave NU the 14-9 lead and a kill by Underdown put the match away.
  • NU stayed composed throughout the chippy set, keeping the intensity up on all of their attacks.  
     
Next Up:
The Huskies resume play on Monday, Oct. 10 against Delaware at Cabot Center. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
