Field Hockey Introduces Seven Newcomers

Seven new faces will join the 2016 squad

BOSTON - Head coach Cheryl Murtagh announces the addition of seven new student-athletes to the Northeastern Field Hockey roster for the 2016 season on Thursday.
 
The 2016 recruiting class spans 11,667 miles, represents four different countries and three states and will add some depth to a roster stacked with eight returnign starters and two returning All-CAA members.
 
Megan Barrett
Position: Midfield/Back
Height: 5-1
Class: Freshman
Hometown: Acton, Mass.
High School: Acton-Boxborough Regional
 
Murtagh on Barrett: "Meg was very impressive competing in the Massachusetts State Championships, which her team won, and she definitely was the leader on the field. She has a very good skill set and is the ultimate team player."
 
Before NU: Played four seasons for the Acton-Boxborough Colonials under head coach Mae Shoemaker … Served as senior captain … Won Massachusetts Division-I State Championships in 2012, 2014, and 2015 … Dual County League All-Star 2014-2015 … Selected to the National Futures Championship in 2014-2015 … Selected for Futures Elite … Named Boston Herald All-Scholastic 2015 … Named Boston Globe Player of the Year 2015 … Selected to the Harrow Sports / NFHCA All-Massachusetts Region and High School First Team All-American.
 
Personal: Daughter of Tom and Lea Barrett … Has two brothers, TJ and Ryan … Was a four-year honor roll student and a member of the Athletic Leadership Group … Plans on majoring in graphic design … Class of 2021.
 
Alice Batt
Position: Midfield

Murtagh on Batt: "Alice will be a great player in the midfield position. She has an excellent skill set and sees the field under pressure. She is a play maker."
 
Before NU: Played for the St. Magaret's College Varsity team … Won the National Championships in 2013 and the Christchurch Championships in 2011-2014 with St. Magaret's … Played for the Canterbury Association Representative Hockey Team from 2014-2015 … Won the 2015 National Championships with Canterbury … Played for the Hornby Premier Senior Women's Hockey Team from 2013-2016 … Finished fourth in the Christchurch Competition with the Premier team … Played for the Canterbury U15A Representative Hockey Team … Played four season of varsity tennis for St. Magaret's College … Served as Deputy Head of Tennis in 2015 … Acted as the Canterbury Tennis Representative from 2005-2014 … Named St. Margaret's College Varsity Hockey Team's Most Valuable Player in 2015 … Named the Canterbury Association Representative Hockey Team's Most Valuable Player in 2015 … Won St. Margaret's College Varsity Tennis Team Performance and Sportsmanship Cup in 2012 … Recipient of St. Margaret's College Sports Scholarship.

Murtagh on Brewster: "Lauren has very good defensive skills. She is a presence in the backfield. Lauren has very good possession skills and will be significant to help us in bringing the ball safely out of the backfield."

Bella Cuomo
Position: Forward/Midfield

Murtagh on Cuomo: "Bella is aggressive, scrappy and disruptive to the opponent.  We have been most impressed by her work ethic and commitment to being a better player.  She has very good core skills and will be a great role player for Northeastern."
 
Before NU: Played four seasons for Morristown-Beard under head coach Kate Alderman … Served as senior captain … Played four seasons with G Force Field Hockey under head coach Leroy Mayers … Participated in the National Field Hockey festival in 2012-2015 … Won the National Club Championships in 2014 … Participated in Futures from 2012-2015 … Named Morristown-Beard's Unsung Hero in 2014 … Made Third Team All-County in 2014 … Named First Team All-Prep 2015-15 … Made First Team All-Conference 2014-15 … Morristown-Beard's Most Valuable Player in 2015 … Named to Second Team All-County 2015 … Made the NJ State Senior All-Star Team in 2015 … Helped Morristown-Beard take second place in Prep Championships 2013-15.

Shawn Davenport

Murtagh on Davenport: "Shawn is a very good defensive player who can hit the ball well. She is the type of defender that will win the ball and then explode into the offense to start the counter attack."
 
Before NU: Played for three seasons at Ward Melville … Started every game at center defense … Helped her team to a record of 18-2, including 12 shutouts, en route to a Long Island Championship in her senior season … Was named captain of the field hockey team during the 2016 season … Was named All-State in 2015 and 2016 … Named to the New York State All Tournament Team in 2016 … County and Long Island Champions in 2016 … County and New York State Finalists in 2016 …  Named to the All-County team in 2015 … Also played lacrosse for three years.

Axelle Dewamme

Murtagh on Dewamme: "Axelle has very good elimination skills at speed.  Her knowledge of the game is excellent and she will help the Northeastern attack in both the forward and midfield positions."

Lauren Feeney
Position: Back
Height: 5-7
Class: Freshman
Hometown: Canton, Mass.
High School: Tabor Academy
 
Murtagh on Feeney: "Lauren has fought back from a tough injury in her junior year.  As a defender for Northeastern, we feel Lauren will be an excellent role player.  She has good core skills and is very strong on the ball."
 
Before NU: Played for Tabor Academy under head coach Kelly Walker … Finished the 2016 season 13-3-1 ranked 4th in New England Class A Tournament … Captain of team during the 2016 season … Named Athlete of the Week (3x) at Tabor Academy … Two-time qualifier in Class A NEPSAC Tournament … Team ranked #1 in Class A East in 2015 … Also played ice hockey and crew.
 
Personal: Daughter of Greg and Mary Feeney … Has three siblings Caitlyn, 20, Joseph 17, and Kristen 15 … Plans to major in business … Enjoys writing, yoga and politics … Class of 2021.
