Huskies post a clean sweep and claim tournament title

BOSTON – The Northeastern volleyball team finished the weekend with a bang. After a four set battle with Fordham on Friday, the Huskies (6-4) posted a clean sweep of both Presbyterian (2-8) on Saturday afternoon and Binghamton (3-6) in the evening. Against Binghamton, Northeastern clinched the first two sets by a comfortable margin (25-18, 25-20). The Bearcats posed a threat in set three but were unable to hold of the Huskies who took four points to Binghamton's one in the final rallies. (25-23)
 
Hannah Fry played another extremely competitive game, earning the Tournament MVP title. Against Binghamton, Fry recorded 12 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Caterina Rosander and Kristen Walding were also named to the All-Tournament Team after the Huskies' win.
 
Leading the Huskies in the final match of the day were Fry with 12 kills, followed closely by Carmen Costa with 11, Kristen Walding with 37 assists and Gabrielle Eyl notching 22 digs.
 
For the Bearcats, Gaby Alicea led the pack with 11 kills. Sarah Ngo contributed 31 assists and Bailey Walker put up 17 digs in the contest.
 
 
Set One Recap: (25-18 Northeastern)
  • Northeastern came out of the gates running putting down 11 points to Binghamton's four.
  • The Bearcats rallied and went on a 4-0 run but could not tighten the gap enough to catch Northeastern. (24-17)
  • Kills from five different players ended set one in favor of the Huskies.
 
Set Two Recap: (25-20 Northeastern)
  • Northeastern began strong on the offensive as eight out of the Huskies' first nine points in set two were the result of kills.
  • The Huskies held a comfortable lead making an attempt at a runaway at 18-12.
  • The Bearcats put pressure on the Huskies by cutting the deficit to three (23-20) but Natalie Shollin and Kristen Walding finished off the set to make it 2-0 Northeastern.
 
Set Three Recap: (25-23 Northeastern)
  • The Huskies began set three much like the others getting out to a 7-3 head start.
  • Binghamton came off the intermission fresh and took their first lead of the match at 11-10.
  • The Bearcats came out on the right end of three attack errors, increasing the gap to three. (14-11)
  • Binghamton kept the lead through 21-17 before Northeastern ripped four consecutive kills to tie the score. (21-21)
  • Back-to-back kills from Burcescu put the Huskies back in the lead and a serve outside the box from Binghamton handed Northeastern its third win of the weekend and the tournament title.
 
 
Next Up:
 The Huskies have a quick turnaround as they are set to return to the court Tuesday, Sept. 13 at UMass Lowell's Costello Athletic Center at 7 p.m.



Recap vs. Presbyterian
Coming off a home opener victory, the Northeastern volleyball team defeated Presbyterian in their first of two matches today. Northeastern (5-4) took the match comfortably beating Presbyterian (2-7) 25-21 in all three sets.
 
Through the entire match, Northeastern was attacking the ball with a large amount of force, forcing Presbyterian to scramble.
 
Hannah Fry led the Huskies in kills with 13 and recorded an impressive .435 hitting percentage, a season best for the veteran. Northeastern ended the match with seven aces. Bredahl, Walding, and Lund each contributed two while White topped off the total. Walding added 39 assists and Eyl tallied 19 digs.
 
Presbyterian was led by Samantha Del Toro with 13 kills and a .478 hitting percentage. Sarah Rogers recorded 32 assists and Mikayla Register put up 14 digs. Presbyterian is set to face Fordham at 4:30 p.m.
 
Set One Recap: (25-21 Northeastern)
  • The Huskies got off to a slow start, trailing by one or two for majority of the first 15 points. (8-7)
  • The Blue Hose continued the attack to gain the lead by three points (11-8)
  • With Walding behind the serve, Northeastern struck back and took the lead 13-11.
  • The Huskies increased the gap to four after two consecutive attack errors from Presbyterian. (18-14)
  • A rocket from Whitehead caught the Blue Hose off-guard ending the point in favor of the Huskies. (20-16)
  • A huge block from Whitehead and Rosander gave the Huskies the serve and an opportunity to score their final two points to take the set.
  • Fry tipped one over to seal the set 25-21.
 
Set Two Recap: (25-21 Northeastern)
  • Fry began set two on fire. Two powerful kills put the Huskies up 2-0.
  • With the score 5-2, the Huskies were registering a .486 hitting percentage for the match.
  • Northeastern continued to strike with full force, pushing the lead to 10-6.
  • Presbyterian tried to claw its way back from a seven-point deficit cutting the lead to two. (17-15)
  • Kills from Fry and Burcescu put the Huskies over to lead the match 2-0.
 
Set Three Recap: (25-21 Northeastern)
  • Service Aces from Walding and Bredahl put the Huskies up 4-2 early on.
  • Burcescu hit one home to give Northeastern the lead 15-12.
  • Presbyterian benefitted from a few Husky errors to tie the score at 18.
  • A quick kill from Burcescu put the ball on Northeastern's side for Lund to step in to hit an ace to sweep the match for the Huskies.
