CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman
Alice Batt recorded her first career multi-goal game and registered what would end up being the game-winner for the Northeastern Field Hockey team at Harvard on Friday night as the Huskies earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory.
Â
Harvard (2-3) fought right down to the end, creating back-to-back penalty corner opportunities with no time left on the clock, but
Becky Garner fended off a few last second shots for Northeastern (4-2), en route to finishing with eight saves on the night.
Â
Batt, a native of Christchurch, New Zealand, was facing off against a good friend in today's game, Maddie Earle for Harvard. The duo, who played six years of field hockey together, each notched their first career goals as well as multiple-goal games in Northeastern's victory. Â
Â
Northeastern has now won its last four meetings in Cambridge.
Â
In the first half, Northeastern took just three shots on goal, and all three shots hit the back of the net as the Huskies entered halftime with a 3-1 advantage.
Â
The Huskies got on board first in the 11
th minute as
Alice Batt netted her first career goal to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead early on. As Northeastern drew its first penalty corner of the game,
Laura MacLachlan whacked a shot at the goal that was rejected by Harvard, but kicked out to
Jessica Unger. Unger dished it quickly to Batt who flipped it into the back of the net for the early score.
Â
Northeastern added to their lead just three minutes later as
Natalie Stewart was taken down from behind in the circle. The tackle resulted in a penalty stroke as Unger stepped up and beat the Harvard goalie to the left to make it a 2-0 lead nearly 14 minutes into play.
Â
Harvard cut into the lead before the half as Maddie Earle got Harvard on the board with an assist by Abbey Thornhill. The goal was the first allowed by the Huskies in nearly 120 minutes of action after holding Providence scoreless through over 86 minutes last Friday night.
Â
Northeastern added another one to the board with time winding down in the first half as
Jamie Bartucca went nearly the length of the field with the ball dribbling into the circle where she was covered with Harvard defenders. Bartucca tapped the ball over to
June Curry-Lindahl who flipped it into the goal to regain a two-goal lead.
Â
After the half, Harvard cut the lead to one, as Marissa Balleza used a Harvard breakaway opportunity, initially squashed by Garner, to get the Crimson within one.
Â
The Huskies regained a two-goal lead when Batt netted her second goal of the game for her first career multi-goal game. A falling down
Kristin Abreu sent a pass up to Stewart who, as she was falling, flipped a pass to Batt who sent it home.
Â
Harvard made it interesting down the stretch, using a man-advantage to make it a one-goal game but the Huskies prevailed fending off two Harvard penalty corner opportunities with no time on the clock to come away with the win.
Â
The Huskies round out their Boston-centric weekend with a home game against Boston College on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Dedham Field.
Â
Sunday is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day at Dedham Field and shuttles to the game are available from Chicken Lou's starting at 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. and the first 200 fans in attendance will receive a Northeastern Field Hockey tumbler, as well as complimentary hot chocolate.
