BOSTON – This weekend, the Northeastern volleyball team will open conference play with two road games against UNCW and the College of Charleston on Friday, Sept. 23 and Sunday, Sept. 25.
Last Time Out
Northeastern squeaked by New Hampshire this past Tuesday in Durham. After the Huskies won the first set in extra points, the Wildcats made a move and took set two by a close 25-23 margin. In a warmer than normal Lundholm Gymnasium, Northeastern was able to beat the heat taking sets three and four 25-20.
In the four set match,
Kristen Walding totaled 50 assists, a new season high for the junior setter. Walding broke her previous high of 47 that was recorded in a five set match against California. Four Huskies posted double-digit digs against the Wildcats.
Gabrielle Eyl and
Jamie Bredahl each registered 19 while
Ashlee Asada and
Kristen Walding tallied 13. Bredahl recorded her seventh double-double and Walding notched her second on the season.
Senior
Caterina Rosander had another impressive performance at the net. Rosander put down a team high 14 kills on 22 attempts with not a single error. This gave her an overall .636 hitting percentage. Rosander also totaled a team high five blocks in the contest.
Scouting the Seahawks
The UNCW Seahawks enter conference play with a 10-2 record. UNCW split its two most recent games, dropping a 3-2 decision to Duke and then beating ACC foe N.C. State 3-1.
The Seahawks are currently hitting 12.6 kills per set with a .217 overall hitting percentage. At the net, UNCW is putting up 2.8 blocks per set, which ranks 17th in the nation. UNCW also ranks in the top 100 in the country in digs per set with 15.52.
This past week, junior Sydney Brock earned the CAA Defensive Player of the Week for her performance against Campbell, N.C. State and Duke. Brock posted 25 total blocks over the three matches including ten at Duke and nine at N.C. State.
Earlier this season, senior Nicole Lott picked up a CAA Offensive Player of the Week award after posting three double-doubles in the Seahawks' sweep of the Appalachian State Black and Gold Invitational. Lott was also named MVP of the tournament and was selected as a member of the All-CAA Pre-season team. UNCW was chosen to finish second in the CAA Pre-season Coaches' Poll and currently ranks third after JMU's defeat of William and Mary. After it's match with Northeastern, UNCW will welcome Hofstra on Sunday.
Scouting the Cougars
The College of Charleston comes into CAA play with a 7-5 record. Five of the Cougars' seven wins have been at home. The Cougars have just returned from playing in the Baylor Classic in Waco, T.X. Charleston came home 1-2 having dropped decisions to rising threat Washington State and host Baylor. The Cougars squeezed a five set win over Virginia in the final match of the tournament.
The College of Charleston comes in just behind Northeastern with 13.60 kills per set, good for 63rd in the nation. Charleston is also posting 15.4 digs per set and 1.6 blocks per set.
Freshmen Lauren Freed earned Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 12 after the Cougars' sweep of their second home tournament. The Ohio native registered three double-doubles including 20 kills against VCU. McKala Rhodes has recorded 180 digs to date which averages to 4.29 per set. 6-2 middle blocker Jane Feddersen is putting up .92 blocks per set and Allison Beckman is tallying 10.60 assists per set.
The Cougars were chosen to finish fifth in the CAA Pre-season Coaches' Poll and are currently sitting in seventh going into conference play. Charleston will take on the Hofstra Pride on Friday before facing Northeastern in the Sunday matinee.
Looking Ahead
After opening CAA conference play with two away games, Northeastern will return to Cabot Center for a six game home stand. Beginning on Sept. 30, the Huskies will play the other six CAA teams within the first two weeks of October.
