Huskies to face Drexel, Dartmouth

Northeastern will kick start the CAA season at Drexel on Friday

The Northeastern field hockey team is extending a warm welcome to the local community of Dedham to come out and support the Huskies at Dedham Field.

BOSTON – After three-straight home games, the Northeastern field hockey team returns to the road Friday night for its CAA opener at Drexel at 7:30 p.m.
 
After their game at Drexel, the Huskies will return right back home to Dedham Field where they will begin another three-game home stretch when the team takes on Dartmouth on Sunday at 2 p.m.
 
Sunday is Community Day at Dedham Field as the Northeastern field hockey team extends a warm welcome to the local community of Dedham to come out and support the Huskies.
 
In addition, the first 200 fans in attendance will receive a free Northeastern field hockey fleece blanket.
 
LAST TIME OUT...
 
• The Huskies went 1-1 last weekend, beginning with a tough OT loss to Maine on Saturday, but bouncing back with a 3-1 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday
• The Huskies kicked off the weekend against No. 19 Maine, jumping out to a fast lead, but for every goal scored, the Black Bears matched it, eventually winning in OT
• Northeastern rebounded on Sunday getting out to a quick lead in the sixth minute of action over UNH and continuing on for the 3-1 victory over the Wildcats
 
DREXEL
 
• The Dragons are 5-5 halfway through the season, heading into their CAA opener
• The Dragons are led by Megan Wiest who has notched eight goals on the year while Erin Gilchrist has a 2.79 GAA with 71 saves between the pipes
• Drexel and Northeastern met for the first time in the 1991 season when Drexel joined the America East Conference
• After Drexel left for the CAA in 2001, the teams took a hiatus, restarting the series when the Huskies joined the CAA in 2005.
• Northeastern leads the series between the two teams 17-7-1
• Drexel won last year's meeting by one goal, though the Huskies have won three of the last four
 
DARTMOUTH
 
• Dartmouth is 3-5 halfway through the 2016 season, beginning the season with a couple of losses. The Big Green have defeated Bryant, Vermont and Sacred Heart
• Dartmouth is led by Carmen Braceras (4 goals), while Emma Plumb and Hailey Valerio have split time in goal in 2016
• Dartmouth and NU met for the first time in 1982 and have met 13 more times since
• The two teams have met for the last four seasons with the Huskies winning each of those meetings including a 2-1 victory last year in Hanover
• The Huskies have won the last nine meetings with Dartmouth dating back to the 1987 season and hold a 12-2 all-time record against the Big Green
• Each of the Huskies' two program losses to Dartmouth have come by just one goal
 
CAA OPENER
 
• Northeastern begins conference play this weekend when they head to Drexel on Friday night
 • NU is 17-10 all-time in conference openers, but 3-8 during CAA play
•After never opening conference play in the first nine seasons, NU will face Drexel in back-to-back conference openers
• Coupled with a 3-0 record when both teams were a part of America East from 1991-2001, NU is now 3-1 against Drexel in conference openers
 • Northeastern is 7-6 vs. Drexel during CAA play and has won three of the last four meetings against the Dragons
 
LEADING THE LEAGUE
 
• Heading into her final season at Northeastern, Becky Garner is currenly third the CAA in Goals Against Average allowing 2.21 goals each game, that mark also ranks 40th in the country
• Garner has also notched two shutouts on the year, (3-0 over UC Davis, 1-0 over Providence) marking her most shutouts since tallying five in NU's 2014 CAA regular season Champion campaign and the most in the CAA this season
• The two shutouts rank first in the CAA and 16th nationally
• Natalie Stewart added a pair of assists this past weekend and in doing so moved into second in the CAA with 0.67 assists/game and 22nd nationally
 
396 AND COUNTING
 
• Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh is in her 29th season at the helm of the Huskies
• Over her 31 year coaching career, Murtagh has accumulated 396 career victories, 379 at Northeastern, 16th most among Division I head coaches and 13th most among active DI coaches
• Murtagh has also notched 127 career conference games during her tenure and helped Northeastern to 16 NCAA Tournaments
