Irvine, Calif. – Northeastern pushed California to five sets on day two of the Long Beach State / UC Irvine Mizuno Invitational but was bested in the final set 15-11. Northeastern (3-4) and California (3-1) alternated set wins (25-19, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21) en route to the deciding fifth set.

Despite the loss, Northeastern played a very strong match. New season highs were set for total assists, total blocks and points. Additionally, individual match-highs were set by
Kristen Walding with 47 assists and
Caterina Rosander with 7 blocks.

For Northeastern,
Jamie Bredahl tied
Amy Underdown's match high 18 kills and notched her fourth double-double of the season. Shaina white posted a .476 hitting percentage with just one error on 21 attempts. Gabirelle Eyl tied her season match high of 25 digs

Cal's Jenelle Jordan also tallied 18 kills with a .351 hitting percentage. Alyssa Jensen posted 64 assists in the match. Rounding out the Golden Bears top performers was Maddy Kerr with 17 digs.

Set One Recap: (25-19 California)
- Kills from multiple players put the Huskies up 7-6 early on.
- Northeastern tested Cal by keeping the score within one at 16-15.
- Cal knocked a few in and held on to edge Northeastern in set one.

Set Two Recap: (25-22 Northeastern)
- After a 4-0 run from the Bears, the Huskies responded with their own 4-0 run to tie the score.
- Northeastern and Cal traded leads through the next few points.
- The Huskies took a three-point lead after consecutive kills by Eyl, Walding and Bredahl. (10-7)
- An ace from Asada right inside the corner put the Huskies up four. (11-7)
- The Golden Bears made a run to tie it at 16.
- Northeastern scored six points to Cal's one with Walding behind the serve to win the set and tie the match 1-1.

Set Three Recap: (25-23 California)
- Cal got off to another strong start getting an 8-2 jump on Northeastern.
- Northeastern came back and cut the deficit to one. (19-18)
- The teams remained tied or separated by one until Cal put down two service aces in a row en route to taking the set 25-23.

Set Four Recap: (25-21 Northeastern)
- Northeastern and Cal traded points early keeping it tied or within one. (7-7)
- The Bears served out of rotation giving Northeastern a free point.
- Costa added a kill to give the Huskies a 13-11 lead.
- Another Bears rotation error gave NU a two-point lead. (18-16)
- Two kills from Bredahl put the Huskies up 21-18 going into the final stretch.
- Northeastern took the last few points to win the set and push the match to five sets.

Set Five Recap: (15-11 California)
- Northeastern led early at 3-2 but Cal put on a strong performance taking the lead back at 9-6.
- Cal held the lead to 12-8.
- Despite pushing its score to 11, Northeastern was unable to catch Cal for the match win.

Next Up:
After traveling for two straight weekends, the Huskies will return to Cabot Center to host a tournament of their own on Sept. 9th and 10th. Northeastern will welcome Fordham, Presbyterian and Binghamton to Boston for games on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Northeastern will face Fordham in game two on Friday, Presbyterian in the 12:30 slot on Saturday and will close out the tournament with Binghamton at 7 p.m.Â
