Northeastern defeats Fordham 3-1 in home opener

BOSTON – In its home opener, Northeastern (4-4) defeated a competitive Fordham team (4-4) in four sets. After securing the first two sets (25-19 and 25-20), the Huskies dropped a hard fought 25-23 decision to Fordham. Northeastern came back relentlessly in set four, winning by a margin of 10. (25-15).
 
Leading for the Huskies were Jamie Bredahl with 14 kills, Kristen Walding with 46 assists and Gabrielle Eyl with 25 digs. Natalie Shollin was another top performer tallying 12 kills and a .409 hitting percentage. Four Northeastern athletes posted hitting percentages of .400 or higher.
 
For the Rams, Olivia Fairchild led the offense with 17 kills, Maddy Walsh posted 39 assists and Morgan Williams contributed 12 digs. Natalie Martinez  recorded the highest hitting percentage at .346.
 
Set One Recap: (25-19 Northeastern)
  • The Huskies and Rams went one for one through most of the first 10 points.
  • With Wang behind the serve, Northeastern went on a 5-1 run taking the lead 11-7.
  • Northeastern continued to strike creating a nine point cushion. (20-11)
  • Fordham gained some ground but was unable to catch Northeastern as a kill from Bredahl ended set one. (25-19)
 
Set Two Recap: (25-20 Northeastern)
  • Again the score remained tight through the beginning of set two.
  • The Huskies began to run away at 18-12 but Fordham kept up its attack closing the gap to three at 22-19.
  • Three kills from Carmen Costa put Northeastern up 2-0 in the match.
 
Set Three Recap: (25-23 Fordham)
  • After a 10-minute intermission, Fordham came back full throttle and got an early jump on the Huskies. (9-3)
  • Northeastern charged back with seven consecutive points. (10-9)
  • The Huskies and Rams traded point for point with Fordham tallying a few kills to take set three. (25-23)
 
Set Four Recap: (25-15 Northeastern)
  • The set remained close through a Fordham timeout at 13-9.
  • The Huskies remained hot and took six points straight before Fordham took its second timeout at 18-11.
  • Northeastern continued hammer down points taking the match with a kill from Natalie Shollin.

Northeastern returns to Cabot Center tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. to take on Presbyterian.
