Huskies fall on Senior Day to Delaware

Laura MacLachlan squashed the Blue Hens’ shutout bid in the 55th minute of action

Box Score | Highlights

DEDHAM, Mass. – The Northeastern field hockey team celebrated its three seniors and the storied career of head coach Cheryl Murtagh in the final regular season game of the year at Dedham Field on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the 5-1 setback to Delaware (13-4, 6-0 CAA), the Huskies (8-11, 3-3 CAA) had numerous offensive bursts, and will continue their 2017 season at the CAA Tournament next Friday, November 3. Northeastern will rematch Delaware in the first game of the tournament on their home turf at 3 p.m.

Laura MacLachlan notched the Huskies' lone goal of the day and spoiled Emmeline Oltmans' shut out bid with a huge goal in the 55th minute of action. Oltmans finished with five saves, just the fourth time this season that she has had to make that many saves in goal with the other situations coming against No. 9 Louisville (5), No. 2 Penn State (8), and No. 1 UConn (5).

Julia Gluyas had a career day in goal with her first double-digit save day in a Northeastern uniform as she made 11 saves on 25 shots faced.

The Blue Hens were led by Greta Nauk and Femke Strien who each had a pair of goals on the day while Nauk also added an assist to her season total.

GOAL DESCRIPTIONS

FIRST HALF
Delaware 1-0: Michelle Thomas dribbled up the field and sent a pass through the circle and to a streaking Femke Strien who, in stride, took a point blank shot for the first goal of the game and her fourth of the season in the 13th minute of action

Delaware 2-0: Strien made it a 2-0 game with her second goal of the day. Ally Pollak started things off with a hard shot that ricocheted up and off of a Husky defender's face, knocked back down and Strien gathered the rebound and swung hard sending a rising shot past Gluyas' shoulder.

Following the Blue Hens' second goal, Murtagh called a timeout to settle her team and in the final half of the first half Northeastern pressured the Delaware defense even drawing a penalty corner with no time on the clock at the end of the first half but were unable to get on the board.

SECOND HALF
Delaware 3-0: The Blue Hens went up 3-0 with Greta Nauk's 20th goal of the season. The junior forward grabbed the ball and dribbled her way into the circle creating enough space for herself to take a back handed shot that just snuck in the left side of the goal past a diving Gluyas.

Delaware 4-0: Just a few minutes later, Nauk dribbled up onto the baseline and sent a pass to an awaiting Taylor Lister who was sitting right in front of the goal and beat Gluyas to her stick side for the four-goal advantage.

Northeastern 4-1: MacLachlan used the pressure defense side of her to help double team a Blue Hen attacker, scooped up the steal and dribbled her way down the field besting a handful of Delaware defenders to get into the circle. She then made a Blue Hen slip creating enough space for her to swing where she sent a shot through the five-hole of Oltmans to get the Huskies on the board.

Delaware 5-1: Nauk added her second goal of the day, and 21st of the season, once again creating her own goal-scoring opportunity in the 62nd minute of action by driving into the circle and ripping a hard and rising shot that hit the underside of the top of the goal getting by Gluyas' left shoulder for the score.
