Huskies fall in CAA Tourney semis

Northeastern led No. 8 Delaware 1-0 at the half, just the second time this season the Blue Hens have been held scoreless at the half

Box Score

NEWARK, Del. – The Northeastern field hockey team held a 1-0 halftime lead over eight-ranked and No. 1 seed Delaware in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament Friday afternoon, but the Blue Hens were able to fight back in the second half on their home turf finishing with a 3-1 victory.

Delaware scored two goals in a 36 second span at the beginning of the second half thanks to the tandem of Greta Nauck and Taylor Lister who alternated scoring and assisting each other. The Blue Hens added a goal in the final minute as the Huskies were playing without a goalkeeper in the comeback attempt.

Camille O'Conor scored the Huskies' lone goal of the game, her eighth of her rookie campaign. She was aided by senior Jamie Bartucca who finished her final season with the Huskies with 15 goals and nine assists.

Julia Gluyas made four saves, all coming in the first half of play while Emmeline Oltmans finished with three saves for Delaware.

GOAL DESCRIPTIONS

FIRST HALF
Northeastern 1-0: The Huskies got on the board first in the 30th minute of action. Ffion Thompson intercepted a Delaware pass at midfield and got the Huskies' offense going in the right direction, dropping one of for Bartucca that was saved by Oltmans.

Following that play, Kristin Abreu drove into the circle, getting the ball to Jamie Bartucca who was sitting to the right side of the goal. Bartucca whacked the ball across the path of Oltmans and O'Conor was, as always, in the right place at the right time as she tallied her eighth goal of the season. O'Conor's eight goals are the most by a Husky freshman since Emmy Zweserijn had eight in the 2013 season.

Today's game marked just the third time that Delaware has trailed at the half this season and just the second time they were held scoreless at the half in 2017.

SECOND HALF
Delaware 1-1: Two minutes and five seconds into the second half, Nauckauck started the play just inside the circle, sending a pass through the circle and to an awaiting Lister, who gathered the shot, turned around and got it past Gluyas for the score.

Delaware 2-1: Just 36 seconds later, Lister took the ball and dribbled it up from midfield to just outside the circle where she sent it in to an awaiting Nauck. Nauck took in the pass and used a sweeping shot to earn the goal.

The Huskies were close to tying the game at two-all on a corner opportunity as Thompson redirected a van de Graaf shot attempt that went just inches outside of the right post.

Delaware 3-1: The Blue Hens made it a two-goal game using an empty net to tally another goal in the 70th minute of action. Michaela Scanlon added the game-sealing goal for Delaware with some help from Lisa Giezeman.

The 2017 senior class was unrelenting as Mia Martin slammed a backhanded shot on goal coming out of the restart while Bartucca tried to send home the rebound as it went just wide with time winding down.
