PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second-straight season the Northeastern field hockey team and Providence College went to overtime and for the second-straight season
June Curry-Lindahl played the hero, this time in the 75
th minute.
Â
Curry-Lindahl gathered the rebound off of
Laura MacLachlan's initial shot on goal which was saved by PC netminder Megan Guilbert, wound up and ripped a shot into the back of the net for the game-winning score.
Â
The goal was eerily similar to last season's game-winner as Curry-Lindahl then earned the 1-0 walkoff for the Huskies
in the 88th minute.
Â
This year's victory came in the first overtime period.
Â
The two teams combined for just 13 shots on the day as both defenses locked down on their opponents in the hard-fought battle.
Â
Once again,
Julia Ennis and
Julia Gluyas split the time between the pipes with the latter Julia earning her second victory of the year in OT. The former made a save, on the only shot she faced, before exiting at the half.
Â
On the Huskies' second penalty corner of the day,
Kellie Stigas tallied Northeastern's first goal of the day in the 26
th minute of action. Just as one of Northeastern's usual stoppers
Ffion Thompson checked out, the Huskies earned the opportunity for the free play giving sophomore Meg Barrett a chance to step in, and she did stopping Curry-Lindahl's insert for Stigas who sent home the goal, her third of the year.
Â
Sylvia Miller evened the score for the Friars in the 46
th minute of play, tipping in the initial blocked shot on the Friar's third penalty corner of the game to make it one-all.
Â
Gluyas and company fended off a pair of penalty corners and a flurry of shots down the stretch to force the overtime period where the Huskies came away the victor.
Â
Northeastern returns to action on Sunday afternoon when the Huskies host their first home game of the 2017 season at Dedham Field. The Huskies will take on California at Noon.
