DEDHAM, Mass. – With 38.4 seconds remaining in the game, senior
Rachel Campbell stepped up, dodged around a couple of James Madison defenders, found a clear space, and fired a shot that ricocheted off the inner-left side of the goal and rattled around the cage for the ultimate game-winner as the Northeastern field hockey team upended James Madison 3-2 on Senior Day at Dedham Field.
Campbell, who put the Huskies up 2-1 at the beginning of the second half, solidified the Huskies victory with her seventh goal of the season to help Northeastern to a 3-1 record in CAA play.
The day, which was filled with talking about senior achievements during the Senior Day ceremony, finished with the Husky Senior Class stepping up to the plate in their final game on Dedham Field.
After JMU got on the board first in the 12
th minute of play, the Huskies were able to erase that lead before the half when senior
June Curry-Lindahl evened the score at one-all in the 31
st minute as
Lexie Dunleavy fed her beautifully in front of the goal and she put one quickly past the JMU goalkeeper.
In the second half it was another duo of seniors who helped the Northeastern take their first lead of the game, when
Kellie Stigas, started off the next goal-scoring play by feeding Campbell from outside the circle. Campbell dribbled just inside the scoring zone and fired a shot on goal that went quickly into the goal for the lead.
JMU was able to even the score with Elfi de Rooij's second goal of the game in the 54
th minute of action. But it was Campbell who came up huge for the Huskies, dodging her way into the circle and firing a shot across her body for the score.
The Huskies head into their final weekend of regular season action when they head to Delaware and Drexel next weekend. The weekend begins at Delaware on Friday before closing out the regular season against Drexel on Sunday afternoon.
