Men’s hockey celebrates banner season at year-end banquet

2017-18 Highlight Video

BOSTON -- The Northeastern men's hockey team celebrated its historic 2017-18 season on Thursday night at the team's annual banquet at Matthews Arena. The Huskies handed out several awards, honored the senior class, and enjoyed memories of Northeastern's first Beanpot title since 1988 and first Hobey Baker Award winner in program history.

The Huskies skated to a 23-10-5 record in 2017-18 and registered the third most wins in a single season in team history. Northeastern also enjoyed its third longest winning streak in program history when it won seven straight games from Feb. 12 to March 10. NU has now finished at .500 or above in five straight seasons.

Matthews Arena was kind to the Huskies this season as the Red and Black won a school record 14 games on home ice in 2017-18. The Huskies wrapped up their home campaign with a two-game sweep over UMass in the Hockey East quarterfinals to advance to the conference semifinals for the second time in three seasons.

After their Hockey East postseason run came to an end at TD Garden, the Huskies received at at-large bid to the NCAA tournament for the third time in program history. Seeking its first win in the tournament since 1982, Northeastern battled Michigan at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. but came up short in a 3-2 loss.

Adam Gaudette became the first player in program history to win the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the most outstanding player in college hockey last Friday at the Frozen Four. Gaudette led, not only the Huskies, but the nation in scoring with 30 goals and 30 assists to become the second Husky in as many seasons to lead the nation in scoring with 60 or more points (Zach Aston-Reese, 2017). He was the nation's only 30-goal scorer and was a 200-foot force all season.

Gaudette and linemate Dylan Sikura share the honors of the team's most valuable player for 2017-18. Sikura, a Hobey Baker Top-10 finalist, finished second on the team in scoring with 54 points. He set a new career-high with 22 goals and led the Huskies in power play goals with 14. Sikura's 32 assists were the most in Hockey East and he registered multi-point efforts in each of Northeastern's first six games. The duo combined for 114 total points, 10 total Beanpot points, and were both named CCM/ACHA First Team All-Americans in 2017-18.

Freshman Cayden Primeau earned the Ed Arrington Memorial Rookie of the Year award for his stellar play in goal for the Huskies in his first season on Huntington Ave. A finalist for the Mike Richter Award, Primeau made 32 starts for the Huskies and won 19 games. He shattered the program record for best goals-against average in a season by posting a 1.92 GAA, to go along with the second best save percentage in school history (.931).

Sophomore John Picking and senior Garrett Cecere shared the Manager's Award given annually to the most improved Huskies. Picking, who missed a chunk of his freshman year due to injury, notched three goals and five assists and played in 37 of 38 games this season. His game-winning goal in overtime on Feb. 16 at Vermont helped the Huskies secure the season sweep over the Catamounts. A transfer from Colorado College, Cecere made an immediate impact on the Northeastern blueline last season, and cemented his place as a team leader in 2017-18. The West Des Moines, Iowa native collected nine assists and skated in all 38 games for the Huskies this season.

After collecting co-rookie of the year honors last season, sophomore Ryan Shea was named the NU Hockey Veterans' Unsung Hero Award winner for his sturdy play on Northeastern's blue line this season. A trustworthy defenseman, Shea blocked 67 shots and was a key component of Northeastern's penalty killing unit that clicked at 82.4 percent. His 16 assists and 17 points ranked second among NU defensemen and he led the team with a +19 rating.

Senior captain Nolan Stevens was named the Donald H. McKenney Coach's Award winner. Stevens finished third in team scoring with 24 goals and 42 points. He blocked 37 shots and netted four game-winning goals. A two-year captain, Stevens returned for his senior year after an injury-plagued junior year, during which he still managed to accumulate 22 points. Primed to help carry the Huskies as a senior, the Sea Isle City, N.J. native became the first player to captain the Huskies to a Beanpot championship since David O'Brien in 1987-88. Always the ultimate teammate, Stevens maintained a winning attitude on and off the ice in 2017-18 and followed his brother, John Stevens '17, in receiving this award.

Sophomore Jeremy Davies was presented the Huskies Radio Award, given annually to the most exciting player on the team. Davies was a dynamo on the blueline in 2017-18 and was named a CCM/ACHA First Team All American. He posted 35 points on six goals and 29 assists this season and was the quarterback of the top power play in Hockey East. His 21 power play points ranked third nationally among defensemen he finished the season with a +18 rating.

Jack Malone is the 2018 recipient of the Fernie Flaman Award, presented to a benefactor of the program who has demonstrated the commitment and dedication of Coach Flaman to making Northeastern hockey a success. A member of the university since 1978, Malone is currently the senior director of facilities services and has been a longtime friend of the men's hockey program and all teams at Northeastern.
