BOSTON – The Northeastern field hockey team will kick off its 2018 campaign at the Wildcat Classic this weekend. The tournament will begin against Boston University on Friday, Aug. 24 at 3 p.m. and will conclude against either host team New Hampshire or UMass on Sunday afternoon at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m.
Â
THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
Â
- This weekend will begin the Shelly Morris era at Northeastern
Â
• Announced in February, Northeastern alum
Shelly Morris was tabbed as the next head coach of the Huskies taking over for Cheryl Murtagh who retired after her 30th season leading the way at NU in 2017
• Morris, a 1994 graduate of Northeastern, served as associate head coach of the program for the last three seasons before becoming the fourth head coach in program history
• Prior to her arrival at Northeastern in 2015, Morris was a head coach for 13 seasons at both Stonehill College and Ohio University. During her time at the helm of the two programs, Morris collected a record of 167-109 and led both to an NCAA tournament appearance.
• Joining Morris on the coaching staff are
Pam Spuehler, a three-time All-American during her playing days at Boston University ('08) and
Teresa Mathews, a standout goalkeeper for Monmouth University from 2010-13.
Â
- The Huskies will take on some familiar foes this weekend
Â
HUSKIES VS. TERRIERS
• Northeastern and Boston University have met 48 times in the past with the Huskies holding a 26-22 series record
• The two teams have met in each of Northeastern's 37 seasons as a varsity program
• Last season the teams met in the pouring rain on Columbus Day where the Terriers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 20 mins of action while
Jamie Bartucca tallied the Huskies' lone goal on the night
Â
HUSKIES VS. MINUTEWOMEN
• The Huskies and UMass did not meet last season (just the second time in program history the two teams haven't faced off) but have met 37 times in the past with the Minutewomen posting a 19-17-3 series lead
• The two teams could potentially meet twice for the first time since the 1996 season and just the third time ever in series history
Â
HUSKIES VS. WILDCATS
• Northeastern and UNH have met 47 times in the past, at least once every seasons since 1980
• The Huskies hold a 26-20-1 series advantage though Wildcats have won five of the last seven meetings between the two teams including a 5-4 overtime contest in the season opener last year
Â
- A trio of Huskies were named to the Preseason All-CAA team
Â
• Seniors
June Curry-Lindahl and
Laura MacLachlan and sophomore
Camille O'Conor were named to the Preseason All-CAA team announced earlier in August
• The three Huskies selected are the most since Kaela Barker, Crystal Poland and Lizzie Priest were appointed to the 2011 Preseason All-CAA team
• Both Curry-Lindahl and MacLachlan found themselves on the 2017 Preseason honorable mention squad while Curry-LIndahl earned 2016 Preseason All-CAA honors after a stellar freshman campaign
• Last season the duo earned CAA All-Second Team honors while O'Conor found herself on the CAA All-Rookie Team
