BOSTON – The Northeastern women's volleyball team (7-6) secured its second win of the New England Challenge over UMass Lowell (1-12) on Sunday afternoon.
Gabrielle Eyl tabbed 12 digs during the match, putting her career total at 1892 and setting her in second place in Northeastern's program history for most digs.
The usual suspects led the Huskies in attacks against the River Hawks. Freshman
Hannah Boyd put away 16 kills, 43 attacks and 16.5 points while
Athena Ardila tabbed 17 kills, 31 attacks and 17.5 points.
Gabrielle Tschannen gained the highest hitting percentage (.368) on the team in addition to her match-leading four blocks.
The Huskies took the first point of the match and held their lead over the River Hawks the remainder of the first set. Boyd set the pace of the set with seven kills, leading the Huskies to a 25-19 win.
Set two was not as easy of a victory for the Howlin' Huskies with the River Hawks taking an early lead and initiating four lead changes. Once NU went up 13-12, it was smooth sailing for the Huskies. Two easy kills by Ardila accounted toward her five in the set and led the Huskies to a 25-16 victory.
The River Hawks took their biggest lead of the match in the third set, pulling ahead, 13-8 in the middle of the set. However, the Huskies' defense stayed strong with Eyl leading the way and tabbing her ninth dig of the match, putting her in the second place position. Regardless, Lowell pulled ahead late and took the third set, 25-20.
Lowell didn't make the final set easy for the Huskies to take home the victory. The score stayed even throughout the first half, tying the teams at 13. From there, NU scored three points off River Hawk errors that gave them the lead they kept for the remainder of the set. The Huskies won, 25-17 to secure their second win of the New England Challenge.
