Northeastern 4, Boston College 0

Senior Fior Arrindell scored twice to power 12th-ranked Northeastern past 13th-ranked Boston College, 4-0, in a showdown of the top two field hockey programs in New England at Sweeney Field.

The Huskies, who are off to their best start in the history of the program, improve to 5-0, while the Eagles fall to 5-2.

Northeastern was the aggressor early on, earning three penalty corners in the first four minutes of play, including one which led to the game-winning goal. After Arrindell rifled a shot off BC goalie Lauren Hill (8 saves), sophomore Mari Creatini was there to knock it in with 31:07 remaining. Creatini also had an assist.

The Husky offense continued to pressure the Eagles, which led to a BC defensive breakdown in the Eagles zone. A BC defender turned the ball over to Maureen Connelly, who dribbled the ball in from 30 yards out and was stoned by Hill on her first shot. But Connelly calmy collected the rebound and slid it past a sprawling Hill and into the net, giving NU a 2-0 lead with 22 minutes left in the half.

Northeastern's next two goals both came off penalty corners and were scored by Arrindell. Leigh Shea set up each goal after collecting the push from Creatini on the first goal at 14:58 and Connelly on the second with 8:58 remaining before the break.

"It was a great first half," said NU coach Cheryl Murtagh. "We were executing our penalty corners very well which is important for our success. But, we really need to play better in the second half and play a full 70 minutes of solid field hockey, especially heading out to Michigan. It was a good win, though."

In the first half, the Huskies outshot the Eagles 10-3 and held an 8-2 penalty corner advantage.

In her first career start, sophomore Diana Nelson stopped three shots in net for the shutout. Arrindell, Melissa Rowell, Alli Bolster, and Laura Edelmeier turned in a solid defensive performance.

Northeastern heads out to Ann Arbor, Mich., this weekend to play Central Michigan Friday (3 p.m.) and third-ranked Michigan Sunday (2 p.m.).
