Ninth-ranked Northeastern was sparked by sophomore Liane Dixon, who fired in three goals, as the Huskies defeated host Appalachian State, 5-1, in a light mist at Kidd Brewer Stadium Friday night.
The Huskies improved to 7-1, while the Mountaineers fell to 3-6.
The Huskies jumped on the board at 11:32 as Dixon scored, unassisted, to put Northeastern up 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Dixon added another unassisted goal to put the Huskies up 2-0 at halftime.
"It was a tough day," said coach Cheryl Murtagh. "It was rainy and cold all afternoon, but we managed to focus at game time and executed well. I thought we dominated the game and were able to pressure them into mistakes."
Northeastern's Sarah Broderick had her best scoring chance of the evening as she darted through the Mountaineer defense and was fouled on a breakaway opportunity, resulting in a penalty stroke. Broderick connected on the penalty stroke, which caromed off the pad of Appalachian goaltender Amy Sarno, off the far post and into the cage, making the score 3-0.
Mari Creatini also helped the Northeastern cause, as she scored off an assist from Sarah Webber to give NU a 4-0 edge. Dixon concluded her stellar evening by scoring another unassisted goal to garner a hat trick.
Appalachian garnered its first penalty corner of the match with less that 30 seconds remaining. After another Northeastern foul inside the circle, Appalachian got one last penalty corner and the Mountaineers' Nara Brookes scored, with assists from Jennifer Beecher and Bridgette Burkhardt.
Sarno registered five saves for the Mountaineers. Northeastern's Emily Roy stopped two and Diana Nelson saved one shot.
