Stephanie Casper scored the game-winning goal, leading the Northeastern field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Commonwealth on Friday in Richmond, Va.
The Huskies capitalized on early penalty corners to take the lead and never looked back. Ashley Webber put the Huskies on the board with her first goal on a rebound after a penalty corner at 11:19. Six minutes later, Casper duplicated her feat to make it a 2-0 game. Before the first half was through, the Huskies took a 3-0 lead when Whitney Shean set up Michaela O'Malley for the Huskies' third goal of the game at 30:42
Just two minutes into the second half, the Rams tried to mount a comeback as Heather McCannon scored an unassisted tally to cut the lead to 3-1, but it would not be enough as the Husky defense and goalkeeper Colleen Duffy stymied the Rams offense, holding VCU to just three shots in the second half.
In the game, the Huskies outshot the Rams, 23-6. Duffy made four saves for NU, while Becca Leuzzi made three saves for the Rams in the first half before giving way to Laura Baker, who made six saves and kept the Huskies off the scoreboard in the second half.
The Huskies conclude the regular season on Sunday when they take on No. 19 James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. NU has clinched a berth in the CAA Tournament, which will be held Nov. 4-6 in Norfolk, Va. NU's win over the Rams, combined with Hofstra's defeat of James Madison, also clinches the second seed and a first-round bye for the Huskies in the tournament.
