Box score

Sophomore Crystal Poland scored early for the Huskies, but two unanswered goals propelled Massachusetts to a 2-1 victory over the Huskies at Sweeney Field on Friday afternoon at NU's home opener.

Poland struck first at the 12:01 mark, as she found the ball inside the circle and ripped it by UMass goalkeeper Alesha Widdall (seven saves) for the 1-0 advantage. Senior back Anne-Rieke Stuhlmann tallied her second assist of the season. Poland finished the game with six total shots, four on target.

UMass answered at the 17:38 mark as senior forward Katie Kelly dribbled close to goal and notched her second goal of the season to tie the score, 1-1.

The score remained at a deadlock into the second half, though Northeastern had several good scoring chances. Senior midfielder Pam Aldridge made a terrific strike off a penalty corner at the 53:49 mark, but Widdall made the save. The Huskies recorded seven shots in the second half, with Widdall forced to make five saves.

Shortly after that Aldridge shot, the Minutewomen took the lead at the 55:29 mark. Jaime Bouazeris potted her first of the season after she smacked one by Northeastern netminder Lizzie Priest (four saves) off a penalty corner. Nikki Panciocco and Christine Cutry added assists on the goal.

The Huskies responded well after the UMass goal, applying constant pressure and recording the final three shots of the game. However, the Minutewomen held Northeastern at bay and escaped with the win.

Northeastern fell to 0-3 on the season, while UMass improved to 1-2. The Huskies will have a chance for their first win of the season this Sunday, Sept. 5, when they host the Maine Black Bears at Sweeney Field. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
