Junior
Kaela Barker and sophomore
Crystal Poland each notched their second goal of the season, and freshman
Lindsay Bennett tallied her first collegiate goal as the Huskies downed Maine in their first victory of the season, 3-2, at Sweeney Field.
As they have done in three of their four games, the Huskies scored first. Just 1:25 into the contest, Barker dribbled towards the goalie and fired a shot that was blocked. The second attempt went through, however, to give Northeastern a 1-0 lead.
The Black Bears rallied to tie the score at the 11:26 mark. Junior midfielder Stephanie Gardiner walked in on sophomore goaltender
Lizzie Priest and blasted a shot into the net to tie the score at 1-1.
Six minutes later, the Huskies responded with a pretty goal from Bennett. Junior forward
Carolyn Malloy took a shot from long range, and Bennett got just enough of her stick on the ball to tip it by Maine goalie Alicia Frisch (six saves) for the 2-1 advantage.
The score remained at 2-1 until the second half, when junior forward Jocelyn Mitchell tallied her third goal of the season to tie the score at 2-2.
The Huskies responded quickly, however, as Barker and Poland connected with several nice passes before Poland fired a shot past Frisch to regain the lead, 3-2.
Maine had several chances to tie the game in the final minutes as the Black Bears played the final four minutes without a goalie. However, Priest made two huge saves off of penalty corners to preserve the win. Priest made nine saves in total.
It was a fast-paced game for both teams, as each squad had ample opportunity to score. Maine tallied 22 shots to the Huskies' 20. The Black Bears also had 12 penalty corners, while Northeastern had nine of its own.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, Sept. 10, when Quinnipiac comes to Sweeney Field. Game time is set for 2 p.m. You can catch that game as well as today's win against Maine online at
