Towson snaps Huskies' eight-game win streak

Towson snapped Northeastern field hockey's eight-game winning streak with a 1-0 decision on Sunday afternoon in Towson, Md.  It is the Huskies' first loss since Sept. 25, a 6-2 setback at No. 1 Old Dominion.

Katie DiFilippo struck the fatal blow for the Tigers, beating junior goalkeeper Lizzie Priest, who kept the Huskies in the game with four saves. Priest's counterpart, Christina Siwiec, stopped five Northeastern shots for her third shutout of the season.

Towson got all the offense they would need in the seventh minute through their leading goalscorer DiFilippo. Off of a Kate Nolan corner, Jamie Salvador found DiFilippo who buried her sixth goal of the season to put the Tigers ahead for good, 1-0.

On 22 minutes, Northeastern earned two penalty corners in the space of 90 seconds, but Towson was able to stymie one of the Huskies' most reliable sources of offense. First Siwiec put a pad to senior captain Kaela Barker's effort from range, and then junior Alison Conti's shot went wide of goal.

Shots were similarly hard to come by in the second half – both teams got off just 11 apiece on the afternoon – and the Tigers managed to cope with Northeastern's possession style.  Towson threatened Priest's net at the hour mark, but the NU defense held strong.  Priest denied Nolan off of a corner, and a minute later her defense blocked an effort from Janine Kovach; at 63 minutes, JoEllen Sumego had Priest beaten, but senior vice captain Beth Cobby was on hand to keep the ball off the line with her team-leading third defensive save of the year.

Coming off an exhilarating 2-1 victory against Drexel on Friday, in which the Huskies equalized with five minute left and then won it with just 39 seconds on the clock, Northeastern did rally to attempt a similar smash and grab in the game's final minutes.  Siwiec stopped senior Carolyn Malloy's shot, but the Huskies earned a corner after the ensuing open play; senior Pam Aldridge's shot was wide.  Then, with three seconds to play, the Huskies earned another corner, with Malloy setting up Aldridge for another crack.  Her shot was too high, however, as the game ended at 1-0.

The Tigers accomplished the rare feat of containing junior Crystal Poland, who leads the nation with 26 goals.  Poland attempted just one shot on the day, her lowest total of the season.

At 5-3 in CAA play, Northeastern has finished second in the final conference standings and will receive a bye into the semifinals of next weekend's conference championship tournament.  The Huskies will next take the field at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, to face the winner of Hofstra and Towson.  Northeastern defeated Hofstra, 3-2, on Oct. 21.  As the top seed, Old Dominion hosts the entirety of the tournament.
