DAY TWO
The Northeastern men's track & field team kicked off its 2011 outdoor schedule with a second-place finish at the Seahawk Invitational after accruing 107 points in the two-day event. Host UNC Wilmington won the 11-team event, totaling 222 points for the victory.
The Huskies efforts were showcased with three solo wins, a pair of second-place marks and three third-place performances.
Rookie
Eric Jenkins started his first outdoor season off on the right foot after capturing the 800-meter run title with a time of 1:54.69. The Portsmouth, N.H. native bested the 28-man field in his outdoor debut.
Veteran
Jonathan Hall followed suit in the 400-meter hurdles. Northeastern's captain matched a career-best in the 400-meter hurdles that also stands as the third-best time in Huskies history at 52.71. With the achievement, Hall qualified for the ECAC Championship in May. Newcomer
Sean Collins took third in the event, crossing in 55.29 in his outdoor debut.
Northeastern's quartet consisting of
Anthony Gentles,
Alex Shapiro,
Myles Mason and Collins earned the Huskies third victory of the weekend in the 4 x 400-meter relay. The winning time of 3:21.38 beat out eight other teams for the win. The 'B' team made up of
Jackson MacDonald,
Darius Velez,
Kemardo Tyrell and
Kaylin Miranda notched third place in the same event by joining forces for a time of 3:28.85. The 4 x 100-meter relay team of
Myles Mason, Tyrell, Velez and Shapiro also secured a third-place showing after a collective mark of 42.83.
Velez debuted for Northeastern in the 100-meter dash, crossing in 10.75 for second place. Velez's mark tied Dave Klemic (May 4, 1998) for the fourth-best time in Huskies history in the 100-meter dash. Velez missed out on the win by one-hundredth of a second.
Evan Whetsell transitioned outdoors well by capturing second place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:51.17. Whetsell recorded eight points for Northeastern with the run.
Three others competed in the 100-meter dash, including Mason's 11th-place time of 11.14. Jumpers
Andrew Staples and
Kaylin Miranda tried their luck at the 100-meter dash as well; collecting 16th and 19th place finishes, respectively, in 11.31 and 11.46.
After the relays, Shapiro and Gentles took their turns in the 400-meter run, posting eighth and 16th-place marks of 49.95 and 51.69, in that order.
Along with Whetsell's strong run,
Nick Ryan picked up four points in the 1,500-meter run with his fifth-place time of 3:57.64.
Brian Doyle earned 13th with a time of 4:05.97.
Staples finished fourth in the high jump (1,88m – 6'2) while
Brian Daly's clearance of 4.50m (14'9) yielded a fourth-place position in the pole vault.
Tejorn Davis and
Brian Racca pocket more Northeastern points in the triple jump, putting together respective combinations of 13.84m (45'5) and 13.62m (44'8.25) for fourth and sixth, respectively.
The Huskies open their home schedule next weekend with the annual Husky Spring Open at Solomon Track in Dedham, Mass.
DAY ONE
After the first day of competition at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington, the Northeastern men's track & field is in second place with 24 points after competing in three events. Host UNCW has totaled 66 points and holds the lead heading into Saturday's final.
Senior
Andrew Staples posted a second-place spring of 7.01m (23'0) while newcomer
Kaylin Miranda finished on his heels with a third-place mark of6.97m (22'10.5). Freshman
Kemardo Tyrell captured fifth with a jump of 6.69m (21'11.5) while sophomore
Tejorn Davis turned in an eighth-place effort of 6.49m (21'3.5).
In the 5K, Daniels Grant grabbed five points with a fourth-place finish of 15:12.25 while
Sebastian Putzeys posted a ninth-place jaunt of 15:25.15.
The Huskies look to make a move in tomorrow's final and clip host UNCW for their first outdoor title of the season.
