DEDHAM, Mass. – After taking a 1-0 lead five minutes into the contest, the No. 15 Northeastern field hockey team (1-1) saw No. 11 Northwestern (1-1) score four of the game's next five goals to knock off the Huskies on Sunday at Dedham Field, 4-2.
Leah Edmondson and
Emmy Zweserijn registered goals for NU, while
Becky Garner made five saves in goal.
Northwestern held a 14-9 edge in shots during the game, and generated 10 corner opportunities, including seven in the second half, to Northeastern's four. The Wildcats received goals from four different scorers, while Lisa McCarthy recorded two assists in a physical battle that saw the teams combine for five cards (two green, three yellow).
The Huskies went up 1-0 early on Edmondson's first goal of the season 5:12 into the game. With Northeastern transitioning from the defensive end of the field,
Jessica Unger threaded a ball towards the circle from the top of the attacking third. Edmondson, meanwhile, cut to the middle of the circle and got a stick on the ball to deflect it past Wildcat goalkeeper Maddy Carpenter (four saves) for the score.
Northwestern would answer 2:15 later on a goal from Nikki Parsley when she took a pass from Kelsey Thompson and sent a low shot past Garner from the top left of the circle.
Coming out of the break, the Wildcats got right back to work, taking their first lead of the day with 21 minutes left in regulation. After earning a corner bid, McCarthy sent the ball onto the stick of Charlotte Martin. Martin then set the ball up for Dominique Masters, who blasted it past Garner for her first goal of the season.
Northwestern would take a two-goal advantage eight minutes later when Caroline Troncelliti took a feed from Parsley and snuck one past Garner from the left.
The Huskies attempted to mount the comeback with less than 10 minutes left, and cut the deficit to one when Zweserijn tallied her second goal in as many games. After taking a pass from
Lindsay Bennett, Zweserijn got behind the Wildcat defense and fired a shot from the right side past Carpenter to the left.
The Wildcats would answer, however, nearly five minutes later on another corner conversion, this time from Tara Puffenberger, to put the game out of reach.
The Huskies will be back in action on Sep. 8 when Northeastern travels to Providence for a 1 p.m. matchup.
