Season StatsDEDHAM, Mass. – The Northeastern Huskies got back to their winning ways on Sunday after defeating CAA rival Towson, 3-0, to push their conference record to 3-1 and overall record to 12-4.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Becky Garner recorder her fourth shutout of the season by making two saves. The four shutouts double her total from a year ago and mark a new single-season high for the Somerset, England, native.Â
The two shots the Huskies defense allowed are the fewest shots an opponent has registered against them all season.
Â
The story of the game, however, was the offensive display the Huskies put on against the Tigers. NU blasted 27 shots in the win, a new single-game high for the 2014 season, surpassing the 22 NU had against UC Davis.Â
Â
Paced by sophomore midfielder
Natalie Stewart with six shots, eight different Huskies were able to put their name on the stat sheet by taking a shot in the game. Stewart also had a team-high four shots on goal.
Â
Midfielder
Marisa Dunn opened the game's scoring at the 28:11 mark of the first half. She deked a few Towson defenders and was able to beat the goalkeeper, Megan Boyle, to the lower left-hand corner. The goal is Dunn's third of the season and her first against a CAA foe.
Â
The offense, however, was just getting warmed up on the cold day at Dedham Field.
Â
Vanessa Pryor, just minutes after Dunn's goal, scored her fourth goal of the season when she pulled a similar deke that her fellow forward utilized and placed the ball in the lower left-hand corner for the marker.
Â
Pryor scored again just seconds later when she deflected an
Emma Lamison shot into the upper right corner of the goal. Lamison was awarded the assist, boosting her point total to a team-high 22 on the season.
Â
After falling in their previous two games to Delaware and Maine, the Huskies looked to regain their momentum with the win. Several different members of
Cheryl Murtagh's squad contributed on both the offensive and defensive ends.
Â
Zoe Kale,
Hannah Wein and Kaci Coveleksi helped Garner secure the shutout with solid defensive play. Coveleski, who has been terrific this season, utilized timely poke checks and intercepted several long passes to neutralize the Towson offense.
Â
Kale and Wine showcased their passing prowess and helped generate multiple fast breaks for the midfielders and forwards, which led to several good chances to score. The Huskies corner presence was also reestablished in the win. The team was able to put together several scoring opportunities off of penalty corners.
Â
Northeastern returns to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 31 at 5 p.m. when the Huskies welcome the Dukes of James Madison to Dedham Field. Prior to the game, NU will honor its seniors with its annual Senior Day. Two days later, the Huskies host William & Mary in the regular-season finale at 1 p.m.Â
