Field hockey welcomes 11 newcomers for 2015 season

2015 Schedule | 2014 Season In Review

BOSTON - Coming off of its first-ever CAA regular season championship, Northeastern field hockey looks to return to the top this season against a competitive schedule as Head coach Cheryl Murtagh announces the addition of 11 new student-athletes to the roster for the 2015 season.
 
"We're excited about starting out with such a competitive schedule," said Murtagh. "We know the value of doing that and what it did for us last year starting out with Maryland and Temple. We have a good young team, and it's going to give them some experience right away."
 
The 2015 recruiting class represents three countries and five states and will add some depth to a roster already stacked with two returning All-CAA First Team members.
 
Kiwi Atkins
Position: Midfield/Forward
Height: 5'6"
Class: Freshman
Hometown: Hampton, VA
High School: Tab High School
 
Murtagh on Atkins: "I believe Kiwi will be a very good role player for us. She just has good, solid core skills. Kiwi comes to us from Virginia which boasts a  great field hockey region in the state."
 
Before NU: Played for coach Wendy Wilson at Tab High School, won a state championship in 2014 … played for Focus Field Hockey club, was one of 11 players from her team to commit to a Division I school.

Sam Bodo

Murtagh on Bodo: "Sam is a good athlete and was pretty impressive as I've seen her this past year. Her development and skills are great as a middie-back for us."
 
Before NU: Played three years at Central Bucks South High School under coach Brittany Gryzwacz … She was captain of her indoor field hockey team during 2014-15 season … Was named MVP of Junior Varsity team in 2011 … Won SOL Continental championship in 2012, 2013 and 2014 …  Named a Suburban 1 All League honorable mention in 2012, third team in 2013 and second team in 2014 … Was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2014 … PIAA District One Champions in 2012, runners-up in 2013, 2014

Rachel Campbell

Murtagh on Campbell: "Rachel is someone that I think has been overlooked and has really come on strong. We are so excited that she chose Northeastern because I do believe a lot of schools have started to pick up and go after her. She is a good athlete and will most likely play in the backfield for us as well."
 
Before NU: Played for four years at Watertown High School compiling a record of 138-0-3. Was named a Middlesex League All Star, was named to Boston Globe and Boston Herald all-scholastic teams. Won state championships each year at Watertown High … In 2014, helped lead Watertown High to state championship with 23-0 record without giving up a single goal all season … played two years of basketball as a shooting guard, two years of lacrosse as a center and one year of track and field as a 400 meter runner at Watertown High School.

June Curry-Lindahl
Position: Forward

Murtagh on Curry-Lindahl: "June is a great addition to our program. She has speed, along with her skill set, and I feel she will be a contributor this fall."
 
Before NU: Curry-Lindahl played for the Wellington Juniors 1 team in Belgium from 2012-2015, reached the finals each year that she was on the team … In the 2014-15 seasons, she played with the Wellington Ladies First Team in the Belgian First Division where she helped her team post a record of 15-6-1 … Also played tennis in high school.
 
Personal: Born Feb. 1, 1997 … Father Robin was two-time Swedish runner-up in tennis … Brother Kai played for Belgian National ice hockey team from 2000-2005, currently plays professionally in Australia … Brother Derek played for Belgian National ice hockey team in 1999-00 and was the Belgian Kitesurfing national champion in 2002 … Brother Ian played for Belgian National ice hockey team from 2004-2006 and is currently a semi-pro wake boarder.
 
Kaylie DeCosmo

Before NU: Played for Pinkerton Academy for three years under head coach Jennifer Resmini … Served as captain her senior year, was named Offensive MVP and recorded 18 goals and 13 assists … Led her team to a 15-2 record for two straight years … 2012 Varsity D1 NHIAA State Champions, Varsity D1 NHIAA State Runners-Up in 2013 and 2014 … In 2013 and 2014, was named to the Harrow Sports/NHFHCA All-Region team, Division 1 First Team All-State, Eagle Tribune All-Star … NH Twin State Team in 2014 … Mandy Pro Spirit Award and Cape Cod Super Sophomore Tournament All-Star in 2013 … Rookie of the Year in 2012 … Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2011 … Played for New England Hockeymates under Marisa Didio in 2013, recording 15 goals … Also played ice hockey for eight years, helping her women's travel team to eight state championships … Won the 2014 Coaches' Award on the Boys' D1 JV ice hockey team … Played softball for four years, serving as captain.

Murtagh on Ennis: "Julia is a good athlete with good technical skills. She is pretty quick, has good instincts, and has some good save ability."
 
Before NU: Played four years at Fairfield-Ludlowe High School under head coach Cathleen Hamill where she was a team captain. In 2014, she was named to FCIAC first team, all state academic team and all state second-team … Played for FC United Field Hockey Club during winter, spring and summer seasons for coach Manzar Iqbal, won National Indoor Tournament in 2014 … Selected for USA Futures Field Hockey Program from 2012-2015 … Junior Olympics selection in 2012, 2013 … Futures Elite selection in 2014 … She was a member of the National Honor Society, took home First Honors at the Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair, and was a Stockholm Junior Water Prize state champion for Connecticut.
