InfographicDEDHAM, Mass. – With no time left on the clock and the score tied up at four-all,
Vanessa Pryor sent in the game winner for the Northeastern field hockey team Friday night to help the Huskies to a 5-4 victory at Dedham Field over Monmouth University.
Â
NU (3-6) drew a penalty corner with about 20 seconds left in the game, and when it was time for the entry the clock had ticked down to 00:00. With just one opportunity to end things in regulation and take the win from Monmouth (3-6),
June Curry-Lindahl sent in the penalty to corner to
Natalie Stewart who set it up for
Kate Carlson.
Â
Carlson's initial shot was saved, but
Vanessa Pryor corralled the rejection and fired two shots of her own, the second finding the back of the net for the game-winner.
Â
Pryor finished the night with the game winner, her first goal of the season, and four shots on goal. She was aided in offense by Stewart who tallied two goals and an assist on the night off of seven shots on goal and
Kate Carlson who fired 10 shots, seven on goal and notched her first goal of the season. Curry-Lindahl added a goal and two assists.
Â
Becky Garner made four stops on the night, allowing four goals while Christen Piersanti was busy for Monmouth making 20 saves during the game.
Â
Northeastern improved to 3-0 on the year while leading at the half and recorded a season-high for goals in a game, the most goals since defeating UC Davis 7-1 last season on Sept. 28.
Â
Northeastern got on the board first using its seventh penalty corner attempt of the game to net the first goal of the game. With Curry-Lindahl inserting, Stewart stopped the ball perfectly dishing it to Carlson who notched her first goal of the season to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Â
The Huskies dominated the first half in all areas taking 17 shots while allowing the Hawks to just four attempts, two on goal.
Â
In the second half, Monmouth rallied off two straight goals at the hands of Teresa Warner who tallied goals at 39:53 and 44:52 to help the Hawks to the lead.
Â
But Northeastern fired back when Curry-Lindahl sent in her third goal of the season. Pryor fired away a couple attempts at the goal off of a Northeastern penalty corner and Curry-Lindahl corralled the Monmouth save and shot it past the keeper for the equalizer.
Â
Stewart put the Huskies on top reeling in a beautiful pass from a spinning
Kellie Stigas and sneaking it past the Monmouth goalie. Stigas entered the circle with her back to the net and dished the pass to Stewart who send it into the net for the two-goal advantage.
Â
Monmouth replied quickly making it a one goal game just over a minute later and tying things up with just 54 seconds to play in regulation.
Â
But the Huskies remained calm, collected the penalty corner input, and used two put backs to record the game-winner.
Â
The Huskies look to carry the momentum into Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they head to Orono to take on the University of Maine.
