BOSTON – Northeastern tabbed another conference win pushing its record to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in the CAA with a 3-1 defeat of James Madison (10-7, 2-2 CAA) this afternoon at Cabot Center. After going to extra points in the first frame (27-25), the Huskies battled the Dukes through three very close sets. (25-21, 25-22, 25-22)
Hannah Fry and Shania White both tied their career highs in kills with 13 and 12 respectively and junior
Kristen Walding recorded 40+ assists for the eighth time this season. Northeastern also remains undefeated at home this season.
In addition to Fry's 13 kills and Walding's 41 assists,
Caterina Rosander recorded six blocks and
Clare Lund tallied two service aces.
For the Dukes, standout Janey Goodman led the match with 23 kills. Also contributing offensively was Tible Yaglioglu who put up 26 assists. Taylor Austin posted 17 digs whole Bryn Recker hit six service aces.
Set One Recap: (27-25 Northeastern)
- The match began with a block by Rosander and Fry to put the Huskies up 1-0 right off the bat.
- Huskies found themselves down 11-8 after tallying a few errors.
- Two massive kills by Bredahl gave Northeastern a three-point lead going into the final points. (20-17)
- James Madison tied it up at 21 after a pair of kills by Janey Goodman.
- After more back and forth, the game was forced to extra points. White put the Huskies up by one (26-25) and an attack error by the Dukes gave the Huskies set one.
Set Two Recap: (25-21 James Madison)
- With the score tied at 5-5, James Madison found a burst of energy to take four points straight, putting the pressure on the Huskies.
- Hannah Fry aids the Northeastern come from behind to put the squad within one. (10-9)
- The Dukes extended their lead back to six points with multiple kills from Janey Goodman.
- The Huskies charged back getting within two at 20-22 after forcing JMU to use both their timeouts.
- Northeastern and James Madison traded the last few points but an ace from the Dukes tied the match.
Set Three Recap: (25-22 Northeastern)
- James Madison and Northeastern traded side outs before the Dukes gave themselves a three-point cushion at 9-6.
- Shaina White tied the set at 16 and tallied another kill right after giving the Huskies their first lead of the set.
- The Dukes recorded three straight errors giving the Huskies a 20-19 lead.
- A kill from Rosander, an ace from Bredahl and a service error from JMU put the Huskies over for a 2-1 match lead.
Set Four Recap: (25-22 Northeastern)
- James Madison jumped to a 2-1 lead, but Burcescu registered a kill to tie it up.
- The teams traded kills throughout the beginning of the set, including powerful attacks from Burcescu and Fry.
- Walding sniped one over to an un-expecting James Madison defense putting the Huskies within one. (13-12)
- Lund secures the lead with a service ace and a JMU attack error to follow gave the Huskies a two-point cushion. (15-13)
- JMU crawled back to take the lead at 18-17 but Shaina White kept a number of the Dukes' attacks in play.
- Northeastern went up 21-19 after kills by Costa and Rosander.
- JMU comes within reach of Northeastern but a kill from Jamie Bredahl gave the Huskies an opportunity for match point.
- A huge block by Burcescu and Rosander ended the set giving the Huskies a 3-1 win over a very determined James Madison squad.
