DEDHAM, Mass. – Despite a game-tying goal with just 20 seconds in regulation from
Natalie Stewart, the Northeastern field hockey team fell in overtime to No. 16 Wake Forest Sunday at Dedham Field.
Â
With less than 30 seconds on the clock in regulation, Stewart jumped a pass and stole the ball just outside the circle, dribbled her way into the circle and slammed a shot past the Demon Deacon goalie and into the bottom right corner of the goal to tie the game with just 20 seconds remaining forcing Northeastern's sixth overtime game of the season.
Â
The six overtime games are the most since the Huskies had six OT games in the 2012 season.
Â
But in seven-on-seven action, Wake Forest scored less than two minutes into extra time to come away with the victory as Rachel Hirsch netted the game winner for the Demon Deacons.
Â
The Huskies had just three shots on goal in the game, including Stewart's goal while Wake tallied 11 shots on goal on the day.
Â
Becky Garner made nine saves on the day, tying her season-high, and is now seven saves away from moving into second place on the NU all-time saves list.
Â
In the first half, it looked like Wake Forest had taken the lead with nine minutes left in the period when Nicola Pluta launched a shot into the net on the Demon Deacon's second corner of the game, but the shot was deemed too high and with that, the two teams headed into halftime with the scored knotted at zero-zero.
Â
Wake Forest got on the board in the 47
th minute of action using its fourth penalty corner of the game to break the scoreless tie. After the insert, Julie Grashoff faked the shot and instead kicked out the ball to Pluta who sent a shot to the left of Garner and into the back of the cage.
Â
The Demon Deacons tried to replicate that exact play just a few minutes later when Pluta hit the back of the net again, but once again her shot was deemed too high and once again, the goal was called off.
Â
After Stewart evened the score and tied the game for the Huskies, forcing overtime, less than two minutes into the extra period, Rachel Hirsch took the rebound from her own shot and lofted it up and over Garner and into the goal for the game-winner.
Â
The Huskies will round out their regular season schedule next weekend beginning with their final road game at No. 8 Delaware on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. and will conclude the regular season at home on Sunday, Oct. 30 against Towson at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
