Northeastern shuts down UNCW on Senior Day

BOSTON – Northeastern completed a weekend sweep with a 3-0 win over UNCW today at Cabot Center. On Senior Day, the Huskies completed their 2016 slate of home matches 11-0. With the win, Northeastern has tied its record from 2012 and achieved its sixth 20+ season under Ken Nichols. Northeastern (20-7, 10-3 CAA) bested UNCW (14-10, 4-8 CAA) with scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-17.
 
Brigitte Burcescu had another standout match, tallying 10 kills with zero errors for a .455 hitting percentage. Hannah Fry had the team lead at 13, hitting .417. Gabrielle Eyl and Jamie Bredahl shared dig responsibility, notching 12 and 10 respectively. Kristen Walding added 33 assists to her season total and Shaina White added two blocks.
 
For the Seahawks, Nicole Lott registered 13 kills, aided by Bella Borgiotti and Alyssa Desjardins with 17 and 16 assists respectively. Sydney Alvis took the brunt of the Husky attack with 12 digs.
 
Set One Recap (25-21 Northeastern)
  • Fry tallied the first point for the Huskies with a kill after a long rally to tie the score at 1-1.
  • Burcescu and White earned a huge block to extend the lead to 6-3.
  • UNCW was forced to take a timeout after White recorded her second kill of the match and the Huskies went up by five.
  • Rosander sent the ball into the back corner of UNCW's court for the kill (12-7)
  • The teams traded points, but the Huskies maintained a comfortable lead late into the match.
  • Lund served four-straight to keep the Huskies ahead.
  • Fry tallied a kill to bring the score to 23-18 and end a short UNCW scoring run.
  • An attack error by UNCW ended the set.
 
Set Two Recap (25-23 Northeastern)
  • Kills by Rosander, Fry and Burcescu helped the Huskies jump out to a 6-2 lead.
  • Bredahl earned a pair of kills (one laser-like attack and one tip, both into the middle of UNCW's court).
  • UNCW was forced to call a timeout, down 12-8. The Seahawks came out of the timeout and scored a pair of quick points to cut NU's lead to two.
  • Two consecutive kills by Fry brought the lead up to five (16-11).
  • The second half of the set was marred by attack and service errors by NU, allowing UNCW to claw its way back in it, eventually getting to within a point of the Huskies (21-20), forcing a Northeastern timeout.
  • Fry tallied two consecutive kills to cushion NU's lead (23-20).
  • A kill by Burcescu ended the point despite UNCW getting within two.
 
 
Set Three Recap (25-17 Northeastern)
  • UNCW grabbed a 5-3 lead early, but Northeastern came rushing back, tying the score at 9.
  • UNCW tried to stay in it but the Huskies began to run away at 18-12.
  • Northeastern scored five points straight to make it 23-14 and two errors from the Seahawks ended the match in favor of the Huskies.
 
 
 
Next Up:
The Huskies will close out the regular season on the road with two matches against Delaware and Towson on Nov 4th and 6th and at Elon on Nov. 13th.
