Northeastern remains undefeated at home with 3-2 win over Elon

BOSTON
– In just its second five-setter of the season, the Northeastern (14-5, 4-1 CAA) volleyball team made a come from behind attack to defeat Elon in the final frame. (15-6, 2-3 CAA) The Huskies and Phoenix traded set wins before both teams went full throttle in an effort to win the match. Elon began set five with the lead, but Northeastern surged late and came back for the win. (25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-11)
 
Kristen Walding tabbed another 40+ assists performance and notched a career high 20 digs. Sophomore libero Gabrielle Eyl recorded a season high 26 digs, just one short of her career best. Hannah Fry tied her career high in kills for the second straight game at 13. As a team, Northeastern set a season match high of 92 digs.
 
The Phoenix were led by Sydney Busa who tallied 18 kills as well as 18 digs, both the team highs. Junior Sydel Curry registered 53 assists and Michelle Klein totaled five blocks. Elon is set to face Hofstra on Sunday.
 
 
Set One Recap: (25-19 Northeastern)
  • After Elon landed an early 3-0 lead, the Huskies battled back to level the score at 3-3.
  • NU picked up their first lead of the game at 6-5.
  • A few bounces went Northeastern's way as they built an 11-7 lead, forcing Elon to use their first timeout.
  • After Elon battled back to tie the score at 15, Kristen Walding landed a sneak attack to restore the NU lead.
  • Shaina White set up Sherrie Wang with the pancake as Huskies took a lead of 19-16.
  • Bredahl picked up a kill followed by a serve that lead to an Elon error for the set victory.
 
 
Set Two Recap: (25-21 Elon)
  • Elon landed the first point of the set, before a fault brought the score to 1-1.
  • After a 4-4 start, Elon generated some momentum in the second set, to nab a 10-5 lead.
  • Elon kept the Huskies quiet in the middle of the frame, leading to a 19-12 advantage.
  • Northeastern mounted a late comeback bid, bringing the score to 23-19.
  • Elon held NU off late, winning the set 25-21.
 
 
Set Three Recap: (25-20 Northeastern)
  • Elon came out with the set's first two points before a three-point run for the Huskies.
  • After Elon tied the score at 5-5, NU picked up two big points for a 7-5 lead.
  • A huge kill by Burcescu gave NU an 8-7 lead. They rode that momentum to a 10-7 advantage, forcing Elon to call a timeout.
  • Back-to-back snipes from Walding brought Northeastern to a 12-9 lead.
  • Northeastern started to pull away as the midway point of the set approached, landing a 17-13 lead before an Elon timeout.
  • Stellar defense from the Husky side of the court led to a 22-19 edge for the home team.
  • NU held on to win the frame 25-20.
 
Set Four Recap: (25-20 Elon)
  • With Eyl at the line, Northeastern went off for three straight points to take a 4-2 lead.
  • After Elon snagged the lead at 6-5, Burcescu came up with a kill to level the score at 6-6.
  • Elon picked up the pace, grabbing an 11-6 lead, forcing the Huskies to call a timeout.
  • The Huskies found their way with Eyl at the service line, bringing the set to only a two-point deficit at 14-12 Elon.
  • Elon found their game again, taking a lead of 18-13.
  • Northeastern used a timeout after Elon gained a 20-14 edge.
  • When it looked like Elon was going to run away with the set, the Huskies upped their attack and tightened up the set, trailing 22-19.
  • Elon held off Northeastern and notched the 25-20 win.
 
Set Five Recap: (15-11 Northeastern)
  • After a 2-0 opening edge for Elon, the Huskies came back and scored to make it 2-1.
  • The Huskies fought to knot the score at 3-3 before Elon took off, notching a 6-3 lead.
  • Northeastern's timeout worked wonders as they came out and tied the game back up at 6-6.
  • The Huskies reached eight points first as the teams switched sides for the home-stretch of the match at 8-7.
  • NU and Elon went point-for-point throughout the set, eventually leading to Rosander picking up a major block and a huge kill to give NU the 12-10 lead.
  • Consecutive kills from Burcescu and Fry brought the Huskies to within one point of the win at 14-10.
  • A service error from Elon ended the match 15-11.
 
Next Up:
Northeastern will return to the court tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 8) at 7 p.m. to face the Towson Tigers.
