Northeastern edged by Delaware in five sets

Newark, Del. – A streaking Delaware Blue Hens team got the best of the Northeastern Huskies in a five set match on Friday night. Delaware (12-14, 6-7 CAA) made a come from behind attack when Northeastern (20-8, 10-4 CAA) had a 2-1 advantage after three sets. Neither team was able to run away with it, recording set scores of 25-22, 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 and 15-13.
 
Despite the loss, 13 season highs were tied or broken during the match. Additionally, five were new career highs. Sherrie Wang and Gabrielle Eyl both set career highs with 23 and 34 digs respectively. Tonight's mark brings Eyl's season average to 5.38 per set, which places her in the top five in the country for the category. Hannah Fry racked up 16 kills, topping her previous career high of 13 and Kristen Walding continued to shine as the Huskies' primary setter, totaling a career high 62 assists, which brings her season average to 9.89, good for third in the CAA and in the top 100 of all Division I players.
 
Bredahl and Fry led the pack with 16 kills a piece while Shaina White found her groove again with a 3.75 hitting percentage on 10 kills and one error. Five Huskies notched double-digit digs while six Huskies put up at least one block.
 
The Blue Hens continued their mid-season comeback on a strong defense and precise attacks. Delaware was led by Maria Bellinger with 19 kills, and Alexa Swann with a .344 hitting percentage. Erin Layne added 45 helpers while Autumn Jenkins manned the defense with 24 digs.
 
Set One Recap (25-22 Delaware)
  • Northeastern came out of the gates running to a 3-1 lead.
  • Delaware responded with four straight to take the lead 5-3.
  • The teams traded point streaks of two or three, eventually settling at an 18-18 tie.
  • The score was locked again at 21 but the Blue Hens mustered up enough energy to go on a 5-1 run that resulted in a Delaware win in set one.
 
Set Two Recap (25-21 Northeastern)
  • After stumbling to an 8-4 deficit, the Huskies charged back to take the lead at 12-9.
  • Northeastern posted its own 5-1 run to extend its lead to 19-14.
  • Northeastern hit 20 first, leaving the Blue Hens behind at 15.
  • A rocket from Bredahl forced a Delaware timeout at 22-15.
  • A penguin slide from Eyl kept the ball in play for Bredahl to tap it over putting the Huskies at 23.
  • A pair of kills from Rosander and Bredahl put the Huskies back in the game and tied the match 1-1.
 
Set Three Recap (25-20 Northeastern)
  • Northeastern and Delaware traded points before Northeastern went up by four at 15-11.
  • Northeastern continued to climb, gaining its largest lead at 22-14.
  • Two of the Huskies' final three points came from Hannah Fry as the Red and Black held a 2-1 advantage after set three.
 
Set Four Recap (25-23 Delaware)
  • Delaware bounced back into action with a 5-1 lead.
  • Northeastern chipped back to tie the score at 12.
  • The score was tied ten more times before Delaware would squeeze out two kills to force set five.
 
Set Five Recap (15-13 Delaware)
  • The Blue Hens got a fast start at 5-3 but the Huskies came back and tied it at 5.
  • Delaware gained some momentum, getting a 10-7 lead, but Northeastern again charged back to tie the set.
  • Northeastern went up 13-10 but were unable to hold the lead, giving up five points straight and dropping the match.
