Northeastern takes down UML in straight sets

Lowell, Mass. – The Northeastern volleyball team downed UMass Lowell in straight sets this evening (Tuesday). Northeastern improves its record to 7-4 while UMass Lowell drops to 5-6. After sending the first set into extra points (27-25), the River Hawks struggled to hold off the Huskies' offense and dropped the second two sets by significant margins. (25-12, 25-14). The Huskies have gone 3-0 in each of their last three matches, the first time since October 2012.
 
Northeastern posted a strong offensive game, recording an overall hitting percentage of .280 and racking up 47 kills in the three-set contest. Senior Kristen Walding tallied her first double-double of the season and Brigitte Burcescu and Shaina White finished the night with zero errors on 13 and 16 attempts respectively.
 
Jamie Bredahl led the kill count at 11 and Brigitte Burcescu led in hitting percentage with .615. Gabrielle Eyl put up 21 digs and Kristen Walding tallied 37 assists.
 
Leading the River Hawks was sophomore Haley Shimon with 9 kills. Sophomore Delaney Mendez ended the night with 24 assists and sophomore Lindsey Visvardis totaled 15 digs
 
Set One Recap: (27-25 Northeastern)
  • UMass Lowell got off to a 5-1 lead but the Huskies charged back and took five points straight from the River Hawks. (6-1)
  • The Huskies continued the attack pushing their lead to five. (15-10)
  • UMass Lowell refused to let the Huskies run away, closing Northeastern's lead to two points. (18-16)
  • UMass Lowell tied the game at 23 and pushed the set to extra points.
  • Back-to-back errors from UML gave the Huskies the two-point win in set one.
 
Set Two Recap: (25-12 Northeastern)
  • Walding tapped one over to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead early.
  • Northeastern continued to rack up points putting up six points to none making the score 8-2.
  • A block from Walding and Rosander kept the six-point cushion at 12-6.
  • Fry began to start racking up kills with Northeastern gaining a 19-9 lead.
  • Northeastern kept the pressure on with a 24-11 lead.
  • Shaina White sealed set two for the Huskies with a kill and Northeastern took the match lead 2-0.
 
Set Three Recap: (25-14 Northeastern)
  • Lowell struggled to maintain control of the ball early in the set allowing the Huskies to take a 5-3 lead.
  • The River Hawks remained persistent and tied the score up at 7.
  • Northeastern jumped back with kills from Walding and Bredahl taking back a 13-8 advantage.
  • The Huskies went to any length necessary to keep the ball in play, diving all over the floor. (15-10)
  • Eyl responded flawlessly to a UML fake-out attempt followed by Walding sniping one over for an 18-12 lead.
  • UML sent the ball flying into the rafters and was unable to locate it giving the Huskies a 23-12 lead.
  • Costa makes the match point kill and the Huskies sweep the match.

The Huskies are back in action this weekend for the New England Challenge facing Harvard on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. at the Malkin Athletic Center and Boston College on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 12 p.m. at Power Gym.
