Northeastern's late rally falls short at UC Irvine

Irvine, Calif. – The Northeastern volleyball team fell to tournament host UC Irvine in four sets this evening (Friday).
 
UC Irvine (2-2) outplayed Northeastern (3-3) in the first two sets scoring 25-21 and 25-17. After a 10-minute intermission, the Huskies came back ready increase the intensity and held the lead wire-to-wire in set three to take it 25-19. The fourth set played much like the first two with UC Irvine putting up a tough game to take the match (25-13).
 
In set two, junior Kristen Walding tallied her 1500th career assist.
 
Leading the Northeastern squad were Shaina White with nine kills followed closely by Jamie Bredahl and Hannah Fry with eight kills each. Kristen Walding again led the pack with 25 assists and White, Fry and Carmen Costa each recording three blocks.
 
For the Anteaters, Harlee Kekauoha, Ali Koumelis and Luna Tsujimoto put up strong performances tallying 15 kills, 46 assists and 22 digs respectively.
 
Set One Recap: (25-21 UC Irvine)
UC Irvine went on a 6-0 run to begin the game.
A block by Fry and Costa gave the Huskies momentum to close the deficit to five (19-14).
The Huskies came back within three but were unable to pass the Anteaters for a set one score of 25-21.
 
Set Two Recap: (25-17 UC Irvine)
UC Irvine started the set with a 9-1 run.
Northeastern responded with a four point run towards the end but was unable to make up UC Irvine's lead. (25-17).
 
Set Three Recap: (25-19 Northeastern)
After a 10-minute intermission, the Huskies began set three with a 5-1 lead.
Northeastern continued to increase their lead to make it 16-8.
Huskies hold the wire-to-wire lead winning the set and pushing the match to set four.
 
Set Four Recap: (25-13 UC Irvine)
UC Irvine began the set with a 5-1 run.
The Anteaters then pushed their lead to six points. (14-8)
UC Irvine continued to gain points leading to a 25-13 win.

Northeastern returns to the Bren Events Center tomorrow (Sat.) at 1 p.m. EST to face the California Golden Bears to close out the Long Beach State / UC Irvine Mizuno Invitational. The match will be streamed here.



Washington State Recap

Long Beach, Calif. – The Northeastern volleyball team was edged by Washington State in its first match of the Long Beach State/UC Irvine Mizuno Invitational. Northeastern falls to 3-2 overall while Washington State improves to 3-1. Washington State asserted their dominance by winning in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-16).
 
After posting 14 assists, junior Kristen Walding is now only 10 shy of 1500 in her career.
 
Northeastern's Amy Underdown led the team in kills with 12. Senior Jamie Bredahl tabbed 13 digs and three aces in the match.
 
For the Cougars, sophomore Taylor Mims racked up eight blocks and Nicole Rigoni tallied 15 assists.
 
Set One Recap: (25-18 Washington State)
Northeastern squashes Washington State's attempt to get ahead, tying it 6-6.
Northeastern begins to trail 17-12.
WSU held its lead, winning the first set 25-18.
 
Set Two Recap: (25-18 Washington State)
The Huskies took an early 5-2 lead with an ace from Bredahl and back-to-back errors from WSU.
WSU closed the gap and tied the score at 8-8.
The Cougars continued to climb eventually taking the set 25-18.
 
Set Three Recap: (25-16 Washington State)
Washington State got a running start pushing their lead to 8-3.
The Huskies cut the deficit to one point at 8-7.
Northeastern bounced back again to keep the Cougars' lead to one. (14-13)
WSU went on an 11-3 run to win the match 25-16.
