Wilmington, N.C. – Northeastern (11-4) battled for a four set win at UNCW (10-3) to open conference play and increased its winning streak to eight matches. After dropping the first set 25-19 the Huskies bounced back for three straight with scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-21. In each set, Northeastern was able to carve a significant lead, but UNCW was able to chip back for a tighter margin. Before tonight, UNCW was ranked third in the CAA. (2nd before JMU and William & Mary played Wed.)
Jamie Bredahl and
Kristen Walding both recorded double-doubles for the match. To date, Bredahl has amassed eight while Walding has totaled three on the season. Freshman
Shaina White posted another error-less match with 10 kills and a .476 hitting percentage and
Caterina Rosander tied her season high of seven blocks.
For Northeastern, Bredahl led in kills with 14 while White held the highest hitting percentage. Walding added another 40 assists and four Huskies put up over 15 digs. Bredahl and
Gabrielle Eyl both registered 18, Walding was not far behind with 17 (a career high) and
Ashlee Asada racked up 16.
The Seahawks registered three double-double performances tonight. Maddy Kline hit 17 kills with 11 digs, Nicole Lott posted 10 kills and 14 digs and Alyssa Desjardins paired 19 assists with 21 digs. Kendall Brender led the match with eight blocks.
Set One Recap: (25-19 UNCW)
- The Seahawks got out to an early lead at 5-1.
- In response, the Huskies charged back making it 9-8 in favor of UNCW.
- Two attack errors from the Seahawks tied the score at 11.
- Northeastern took the lead by three points at 19-16 but UNCW fought back to go up 20-19.
- A kill from UNCW ended the set in favor of the Seahawks 25-19.
Set Two Recap: (25-22 Northeastern)
- The Huskies put their better foot forward in set two, keeping UNCW within one point. (5-6)
- UNCW was forced off its game by Northeastern and the Huskies were able to take a seven-point lead at 16-9.
- Northeastern continued the offensive pushing the score to 19-12.
- Northeastern got as far away as 21-12 when UNCW rallied to score 10 points to Northeastern's four.
- The Huskies were able to hold onto the lead, scoring the last few points to put them over and tie the match 1-1.
Set Three Recap: (25-22 Northeastern)
- Much like set two, set three began close, the Huskies holding UNCW to only a one or two point lead. (7-5)
- Hannah Fry scored to give Northeastern its first lead of the set at 11-10.
- The Huskies and Seahawks traded points until kills from White, Walding and Bredahl gave Northeastern a three-point cushion at 20-17.
- UNCW chipped back and cut the lead to one at 23-22.
- Kills from White and Burcescu sealed set three for Northeastern again with a score of 25-22.
Set Four Recap: (25-21 Northeastern)
- Northeastern took its earliest lead of the match with an ace from Lund. (3-2)
- Three consecutive kills from Bredahl gave the Huskies a 10-5 lead.
- Back-to-back kills from Burcescu racked the score up to 17-11.
- The Seahawks made a run to get as close as 22-19 but Burcescu and White could not be stopped from taking Northeastern's eighth straight win.
